In the Davis Cup doubles Coombc and Malfroy. (New Zealand) defeated Hare and Wilde (England) 6/3, 2/6, 6/3, 6/2. Wilde made some loose shots in the first set. The New Zealanders captured Hare’s service in the fifth game, Coombe playing some good lobs. The Englishmen drew level, taking Malfroy’s service at 3/3, but driving errors and loose returns told against the Englishmen. Better combination and brilliant volleying turned the tables in the second set, Malfroy falling. into errors, while Coombe was erratic. After a slight delay, owing to rain, the Englishmen led 2/0 in the fourth set. but errors enabled the New Zealanders to draw level at 2/2. after which they won comfortably. The New Zealanders’ lobbing was consistently brilliant, preventing the Englishmen maintaining pressure. The New Zealanders advanced to the net quicker and volleyed more decisively than their opponents. Wallace Myers, writing in the “Daily Telegraph,” says the British were inferior in tactics and confidence. ITALY v MONACO (Received This Day, 10.40 a.m.) ROME, May 12. In a Davis Cup match, Canapele (Italy) defeated Noghes (Monaco), 6/0, 6/3, 6/1; Destefani (Italy) defeated Medicin (Monaco), 6/1. 6/2, 6/2.
