GERMAN SHOT
BY POLISH FRONTIER GUARD NAZI RECRUITING OFFICER INVOLVED. RIVAL ATROCITY CAMPAIGNS IN FULL BLAST. (Independent Cable Service.) WARSAW. May 12. A frontier guard today shot and wounded a German-Polish subject who was crossing the river in a boat near Posen. The Polish news agency version of the incident states that the German was wounded when a notorious smuggler was rowing him across the river dividing Germany from Poland. The smuggler was shot dead. It is understood that the German was crossing into the Reich at the invitation of a Nazi recruiting officer and that the sentry called “Halt” before shooting. ’ ' The German and Polish Press campaigns accusing each other of atrocities against minorities are in full blast. SOVIET SUPPORT OUTCOME OF DISCUSSION IN WARSAW. WARSAW, May 11. The Foreign Office spokesman, referring to the meeting between the Russian Vice-Commissar , of Foreign Affairs, ,M. Potemkin, and the Polish Foreign Minister, Colonel Beck, said today: “Both ascertained the friendly and objective attitude toward .each other. Poland has learned that the Soviet fully understands the Polish attitude toward the negotiations between Britain and the Soviet. “M. Potemkin assured Colonel Beck that the Soviet takes a positive attitude toward Colonel Beck’s statements of Poland’s attitude toward Germany.” MEDIATION OFFER * SAID TO HAVE BEEN MADE BY JAPAN. TOKIO, May 12. The newspaper “Asahi Shimbun” asserts that Japan recently offered to mediate in the Danzig dispute between Poland and Germany .
