STORKS IN ALSACE
EARLIER ARRIVAL THIS YEAR. Storks have made their appearance earlier than usual in Alsace this year, which is taken as a sign of a good summer. Alsatians regret that storks have grown rarer in recent years in Alsace, and an investigation has been made into the circumstances of their migration during the last two years, with the following results: In 1937, in the Department of the Bas-Rhin, 124 nests were counted, of which 97 were occupied. It would look as though storks loved comfort, and detested noise. They avoid industrialised regions. Risk of contact with high tension cables and noises of factories have been found to have caused many to abandon their nests. The old Alsatian custom of firing off guns at a marriage and making considerable noise has also caused the storks to seek other quieter regions. Efforts h r ave been made to induce the storks to stay in Alsace. Many artificial nests have been built for them during the cold season, and it has been noted with satisfaction that the birds have taken to these homes.
