CARTERTON
RACING CLUB MEETING. TRAINERS LICENSES GRANTED. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Carterton Racing Club was held in the P. and A. Society’s board room last evening, Mr W. Howard Booth presiding. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs P. Bain, H. J. Brown, Geo. Eaton and C. Reid. The treasurer’s statement showed that the overdraft at the Bank of New Zealand to be £520 6s 4d. The receipts since the last meeting amounted to £216 Ils Id. The secretary of the New Zealand Racing Conference wrote stating that the annual meeting would be held in Wellington on July 17. Two applications for trainers’ licenses, Messrs W. Moroney and Geo. Neich, were granted. CALF CLUB. MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. A meeting of the executive of the Carterton group of the Calf Club was held yesterday and was presided over by Mr G. L. Rayner. The purpose of the meeting was to draw up a new set of rules for the guidance of the Carterton Group. These were considered and will be submitted for confirmation to a further meeting next week. A Worthy Object. For some time past the residents of Dalefield have made every endeavour to build up a fund for hall improvements and to further this worthy object intend to hold card tournaments each week on a Tuesday evening to supplement what has already been subscribed. Milking Shorthorns. The annual meeting of the Welling-ton-Taranaki branch of the New Zealand Milking Shorthorns’ Association was held at Palmerston North recently. Mr J. H. Mason presiding. Among those present were: Messrs W. C. Deller, W. J. Thomas and W. B. Campin (Carterton). The Wairarapa and Masterton A. and P. Associations among others thanked the Association for special prizes donated to their respective shows. It was resolved that the Wairarapa clubs be advised that the cup offered will be re-dated and will be for competition during the current year. This was in respect to the cup not competed for last year by Wairarapa Boys and Girls’ Agricultural Clubs. The election of the officers resulted as follows:—Chairman, Mr W. J. Slack; delegate to Council, Mr W. J'. Thomas (Carterton); secretary, Mr V. M. Pitt. It was resolved that £lO 10s be allotted to the. three breeders scoring the highest aggregate points at shows in the Wellington-Taranaki - Wairarapa district.
Among other societies Wairarapa was granted £1 Is each for yearling bull and yearling heifer, and Masterton £1 Is for bull calf and heifer calf. The following judges were recommended for the shows mentioned:— Manawatu and West Coast, Mr W. C. Deller .Carterton); Horowhenua, Mr J. H. Mason; Stratford, Mr W. J. Thomas (Carterton); Feilding, Mr L. R. Field; Wairarapa, Mr J. H. Mason; Masterton, Mr F. Bond or Mr W. J. Slack; Taranaki Metropolitan, Mr W. J. Slack. Appreciation was expressed of the attendance of Messrs W. C. Deller, W. B. Campin and W. J. Thomas from Carterton. Unlawful Shooting of Game. It is understood that complaint has •been made to the Carterton police that ducks are being secured by unlawful means by shooting parties at Gladstone and other parts of the district ' I: is reported that ducks are being shot after the rise of the moon late at night, and early in the morning. It is not known if the shooters are having any luck. It may be of interest to know that it is unlawful to shoot duck or any wild fowl one hour after sunset o ’ one hour before sunrise. It is understood that the ranger has been informer of the alleged breaches and offenders who are caught will be prosecuted.
WOMEN’S INSTITUTE ' BIRTHDAY AT CARTERTON. The monthly meeting of the.Carterton Women’s Institute was held in the Masonic Hall, when Mrs H. Knutson presided over a large attendance of members and visitors, the occasion being the celebration of the Institute’s fifth birthday. The Ode and Aspiration, followed by the prayer for peace and the Institute Song, opened proceedings. The usual procedure dealing with minutes and financial report followed. A letter was received from the Carterton branch of the R.S.A. thanking the members for once again breaking the Institute’s previous record for the sale of poppies on April 21. when £6O 9s was realised. It was agreed that the Institute cooperate with other organisations with regard to the Home Industries Section of’the forthcoming show to be held by the Wairarapa Poultry, Game and Cage Birds’ Association. . It was announced amid applause that a side of bacon had been presented to the Institute by IVJr and Mrs H. J. Brown whereby it is hoped to inciease funds. Miss Wolters thanked the members for the delightful gift presented at the last meeting. Mrs A. Pink gave a comprehensivereport of the recent Council meeting of the Wairarapa Federation held in Masterton in April. Mrs M. Worsfold delighted the audience with two songs, and little Norma Tinsley entertained with twe recitations, which were warmly applauded, and she was presented with a posy by the president. The beautiful birthday cake, made and presented by Mrs H. Deller, and iced bv Mrs M. Johnson, was the centre of" attraction. At an appropriate time the president lit the candles and
called on Mrs Johnson to blow them out, after which Mrs Deller cut the cake. The members of the Drama Circle presented an amusing and clever play entitled “Mrs Watson’s Window,’’ and judging by the various outbursts ot laughter, the points were appreciated by the audience. An amusing competition disentangling letters to form the names of various animals was won by Mrs H. G* Steffert, who had a complete list. Mrs E..W. Allen was found to be occupying the luckiest chair in the room The competitions had a great number of entries, and the points for scones were won by Mrs A. T. Hawke, with Mrs A. Knutson second and Mrs W Steven third, while those for the jai of jelly went to Mrs E. H. Hawker first. Mrs White second and Mrs B. Trapp third. ‘ The competitions for next month are: (1) Six pikelets: <2) the best article from one yard of cotton material. Shoulder sprays were presented to representatives of other institutes and organisations, Mrs Worsfold, Mrs A. Pink, Mrs Trapp, Mrs 11. Deller and Mrs M. Johnson. The singing of the National Anthem I brought a very enjoyable gathering to a close.
