MEETING OF FEATHERSTON COUNCIL ESTIMATES FOR THE YEAR. | I NO ALTERATION IN RATES. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Featherston Borough,Council was held last night. The Mayor, Mr J. W. Card, presided, and there were present Councillors T. G. Hardie, H. W. Cundy, B. B. Donald, C. C. Kenward, M. B. Tait. C. R. Skipage, W. Johnson and J. S. Viles. An apology for absence was received from Councillor R. F. Watson, who was granted three months’ leave of absence. The clerk reported the receipts since the last meeting totalled £231 18s 9d. The balances of the various borough accounts were as under: — District Fund account, credit, £926 3s 3d; Cemetery account, credit, £4 Is 8d; Domain account, credit, £26 9s 7d; Mayor's Relief Fund, credit, £lOB 6s 6d; water supply loan, 1937, credit. £l9l Is 7d; Literary Institute account, debit, £l3 2s Id.
Accounts amounting to £409 9s 6d were, passed. The annual report of the SanitaryInspector stated that no notifiable infectious diseases had been recorded. All drainage and plumbing work had been submitted to the usual rigid testing and inspection. The sewerage and refuse services were giving satisfaction, no complaints having been received. In connection with the water supply and swimming baths, a sanitary survey had been carried out at the catchment area and three water samples were taken and forwarded to the Dominion Laboratory for chemical analysis, the result being satisfactory. The general standard of food sellers’ premises was good and all premises were licensed. Five milk samples were taken and forwarded for analysis and found satisfactory. The routine inspection of habitations had been carried out and eight written requests served in connection with complaints. The secretary of the Library Institute wrote asking the council to take over the control of the Ladies’ Rest Room and also to sanction a vote of £5O for children’s books. It was resolved to hold the matter over for further consideration by the library committee. Messrs Johnson and Hardie were appointed to confer with the library committee and report to the next council meeting. The Transport Department wrote requesting the council to enforce the regulation against cyclists riding more than two abreast.
The works committee reported that seven men were employed opening up and removing the old 5-inch water main from the upper end of Watt Street.
The engineer reported that work was proceeding satisfactorily with the settling tank in Abbott’s Creek, as a start for an auxiliary water supply.
It was resolved to make a fire break at the southern end of the Domain and to repair the fence.
It was decided that the tender of Messrs G. Cook, Ltd., for linoleum for the ladies’ room and passages at Anzac Hall be accepted. The building committee submitted a report on charges made for public halls and recommended a rise in the tariff of about 10 per cent and that no decorations except on the stage be allowed in the main Anzac Hall. The report was approved and it was decided that no rebates were to be allowed as in the past. The Badminton Club was granted the use of the Town Hall on the same terms as last year. A vote of thanks was accorded to Miss 'Card and the Soldiers’ Graves Committee, who assisted in the Anzac Day ceremonies, and a letter of thanks is to be sent to the Masterton Band for its attendance.
Estimates for the year were submitted showing an anticipated expenditure of £2397, which would entail rates totalling Is Ijd in the £, the same as last year. The estimates were approved.
