WOMEN’S INSTITUTE. MEETING AT PARKVALE. ("Times-Age” Special.) Mrs N. Peacock presided over a well attended meeting of the Parkvale Women’s Institute held in the Parkvale Hall on Wednesday. “ Mrs W. Adams, one of the delegates who attended a Federation meeting in Masterton last month, gave a very in- < teresting resume of the business tran- j sacted for which she was accorded a hearty vote of thanks . , A questionaire on the domestic workers problem was answered by all members. i Invitations were received from the .Carterton and Pirinoa Women's insti'lutes to attend their birthday gather- j ings, and delegates were appointed to represent the institute. Mrs F. Joblin, president of the Wairarapa Federation, gave a most inter- { eating demonstration on a bead evening t bag and was heartily thanked. ANNUAL BALL. ‘ ( The annual ball in connection with the local lodge of Druids will be held i in the King’s Theatre, Carterton, on ] Monday night. Judging by the interest ] that is being taken in this year’s func- > tion the 1939 ball promises to be a great success. Reports regarding the i sale of tickets are very encouraging | and as the proceeds are for a very , worthy object, to assist the benevolent < fund of the lodge, the ball should spec- : ially appeal to members of the lodge and sister societies of the Wairarapa. i Members of various lodges are asked < to wear regalia. I i SCHOOL JUBILEE. I ! • MEETING OF EX-PUPILS. I A meeting of ex-pupils of the Carterton District High School was held : on Wednesday evening for the purpose of winding up the affairs in connection with the recent jubilee functions. It was decided to spend the £ll creditbalance of funds in hand upon some useful gift to the school and with this purpose in view the following committee was set up to deal with the matter.' Messrs H. J. McKenzie, F. B. Knutson and R. P. Wakelin. HOCKEY. CARTERTON v. HASTWELLS. Hockey enthusiasts are looking forward to the game between Carterton and Hastwells. 1 ) The Carterton team will probably have one of its toughest games of the season against Hastwells tomorrow on the Carterton ground. Carterton will be represented as under: —A. Ward, R. Byers, Scott, S. Fisher, M. Worsfold (captain), D. Irwin, J. Steel, R. Brown, A. Fisher, D .Jackson, V. Sayer. Emergencies: B. Roberts, A. Harp. Hinemoa Team. The Carterton Hinemoa ladies' team will be as follows in a match against Kia Ora at Carterton tomorrow at 2 o'clock:—T. Bradbury, T. Compton, K. Te Tau, E. Pura, E. Stubbs, B. Irwin, B. McPhee, W. Finn, V. Ward, G, Ward, M. Parker. Church Service. Church of England services will be held at Gladstone on Sunday morning and at Parkvale at 2 p.m. The Rev W. F. Stent will officiate at both services. Popular Young Lady. Recently Miss Gladys Hart, only daughter of Mr and Mrs W. A. Hart, of Wyndham Street, Carterton., whose wedding will take place in Wellington tomorrow, was the guest of honour at a dinner party at the -'Matador.” On another occasion Mrs Watson and Mrs Griffiths gave the bride-to-be a “5 to 7 tea” party when Miss Hart was the recipient of many useful wedding presents. Defence League. A meeting of the Provisional Committee of the Carterton branch of the Defence League Was held last evening. Mr W. Howard Booth was voted to the chair. ' Mr E. T. Beaven was elected secretary and treasurer, pro tern. It was decided to make an active canvas of the district for members. It was resolved to circularise all sports bodies and women's organisations in Carterton to secure their co-operation and call the delegates of these bodies to a public meeting. A vote of thanks was accorded to the P. and A. Society for the use of their board room free of charge for the preliminary meeting. Football Teams.
