BUSINESS AT MONTHLY MEETING. GRANT TO LANSDOWNE SCHOOL. The chairman, Mr H. P. Hugo, presided at the monthly meeting of the Trust Lands Trust, held last night. Others present were: Messrs J. Macfarlane Laing, E. G. Eton, A. O. Jones, C. E. Grey, R. Krahagen and H. H. Daniell. An apology for absence was received from Mr J. H. Handyside. A letter was received from the Lansdowne School Committee stating that the Education Board had recently appointed a teacher to conduct a class at the Masterton Hospital. The class would be treated as a side school to Lansdowne. The board would pay the teacher’s salary but would not provide the necessary equipment, estimated to cost £l5, and the Trust was asked to make a grant equal to that sum so that the class could be established in a satisfactory manner. “It is a move in the right direction and is well worth while supporting,” remarked Mr Jones, who moved that the sum of £l5 be placed on the estimates for the purchase of equipment. From an educational point of view, he added, the Trust could not spend money in a better way. Mr Laing: “As long as we arc not merely relieving the Government of an expenditure that is rightly theirs I would support it.” Other members supported the
motion, Mr Krahagen observing: “It is something we should be pleased to be associated with.” The motion was carried.
An application was received from the Memorial Park Lighting Committee asking for a grant towards the cost of installing lights at the Park. “These clubs have raised a fair amount of money and I believe in helping those who help themselves,” stated Mr Laing when moving that a grant of £25 be made to the Lighting Committee from the Cameron and Soldiers’ Park Fund which is in credit. The motion was carried, subject to the committee installing the additional two lights for which the money is reouired. ! ’ The treasurer reported a credit balance of £llOl 9s lid. Rentals for themonth amounted to £268 12s lOd. A request from the Wairarapa and Ruahine Aero Club for a grant to enable it to carry on its work was reI ferred to the estimates meeting.
