BIBLE SOCIETY

MEETINGS AT LANSDOWNE I AND UPPER PLAIN. a ADDRESSES BY ORGANISING SECRETARY. Two further meetings of the British and Foreign Bible Society were held on Wednesday and Thursday. j The first took place in the Lansdowne Presbyterian ■ Church, the Rev D. McNeur occupying -the chair and conducting the meeting. ‘ • The minutes of last year’s meeting ■ were read by the secretary, Mrs S. N. ■ Kilgour, and duly confirmed, and Mrs L. B. Maunsell and Mrs Kilgour were re-elected as president and secretary respectively. Mrs Violet Wakelin, organising secretary for the Wellington Province, then spoke of the work of the society and specially emphasised the brave efforts of the native colporteurs in foreign parts, who, despite the difficulties and dangers of these troublous times, still persevered in their task of distributing the Scriptures “to all peoples.” A discussion concerning the appointment of additional collectors followed and it was most pleasing to welcome Sister Paterson, Mrs Whyborn and Mrs C. T. Richardson as volunteers for this work. Tea served by the ladies closed a happy afternoon and Mrs Wakelin offered the society’s thanks to president, secretary, collectors and all helpers. The Anglican Church at the Upper Plain was the scene of Thursday’s gathering, where a warm welcome awaited Mrs Wakelin. Miss L. McGregor, president of the Upper Plain branch, opened the meeting with a Bible reading and hymn, following which Mrs Wakelin again spoke on overseas work. In the course of her talk Mrs Wakelin described the headquarters of the British and Foreign Bible Society, the Bible House situated in the heart of the busy city of London. She gave details of the way in which the Word of God was translated into foreign languages and despatched to the most outlying places of the world. Finally she outlined j a scheme for the upkeep of Colpor- ' teurs and their work by Now Zealand I people. Particulars of this scheme i could be obtained from the Bible > House, Wellington, or from local sec- | rotaries. | At the close of an interesting meeting Mrs J. W. Perry, hon secretary of the branch, entertained Mrs Wake- | lin at afternoon tea at her home. i The annual collection in the Mas- ! terton district is now due to take place j and the society feels confident that j it will receive even more support | than in previous years. Annual re--1 ports or literature concerning the soj ciety’s activities may be obtained free ! of charge from Mrs V. Wakelin. OrI ganising Secretary. Bible House, WelJington.
