SAVAGE BOMBING
HUNDREDS PERISH IN CHINA MANY CHILDREN DROWNED. IN FLIGHT ACROSS HARBOUR AT CHUANCHOW. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. LONDON, May 11. The Shanghai correspondent of “The Times” says that hundreds perished in a huge fire which is sweeping Chuanchow as the result of Japanese bombings. Terrified children fled across the harbour and were drowned. The prison was wrecked and wardens fired on frenzied escapees.
The following cablegram was received by the Chinese Consulate-General in Wellington yesterday:—“The Japanese statement that when their planes bombed Chungking there were Chinese anti-aircraft guns in the vicinity of the foreign consulates which fired on them is contrary to the truth. “The aim of the Japanese is to mislead the public and to free themselves from responsibility. In order to protect the lives and property of the foreign residents, no anti-aircraft batteiies were placed in the vicinity of the foreign consulates.”
