YOUNG FARMERS
WAIRARAPA FEDERATION MEETING ENTERTAINMENT OF VISITORS. TEAM IN DEBATING CONTEST. There was a large and representative attendance of delegates at the annual meeting of the Wairarapa Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs, held in Masterton yesterday. The president (Mr W. James) occupied the chair. Mr James extended a welcome to Mr H. M. Linklater, of Palmerston North, the first president of the Wellington Council of Young Farmers’ Clubs.
The treasurer, Mr H. M. Boddington, reviewed the balance sheet, which showed a credit balance of £46 Is sd. The financial position was regarded as very satisfactory. It was stated that a further £lO, the proceeds of a recent social gathering held by the Masterton Club, was yet to come to hand and would still further augment the finances.
The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: Patron, Mr G. H. Perry; president, Mr W. James; vicepresident, Mr Norman Martin; treasurer, Mr H. M. Boddington; executive committee, Messrs G. E. Allen and H. C. Pearce (advisory members), D. McGregor, G. Cotter, J. S. Mackay, G. Cotter, F. Bremner, E. Bellis and G. McKenzie (active members).
During a discussion on the question of raising funds' to entertain visiting parties, the secretary, Mr N. Lamont, said it had been suggested that a levy should be placed on each club to provide the necessary finance. Mr D. McGregor said that the executive should start a fund. It would not be fair to hamper the weaker clubs by a levy. Mr H. Bennett said that he thought that touring might be overdone. There seemed to be too many visiting parties. Mr J. H. Bremner: “The Railways Department is doing all right out of them.” It was decided that clubs be given an opportunity to hold social gatherings to raise funds for entertainment purposes or else make a direct contribution towards the central fund. Sil’ William Perry urged that every effort should be made to enable members to see practical farm work being carried out and hear instructive address. Personally, he was prepared to do all he could in that direction. It was decided to enter a team in the Wellington Provincial debating contest. Mr James reported on a proposal by the Dominion Council that Young Farmers’ Clubs inaugurate a tree planting scheme as a centennial memorial. The trees, it was stated, would be provided free. The matter was referred to the individual clubs for consideration. Various matters were discussed for improving the monthly meetings of clubs. It was decided to recommend that no change be made in the club badges but some criticism was directed at the badge on the blazers, which was considered too gaudy. At a subsequent meeting of the executive, Messrs W. M. McLaren, J. H. Bremner and J. M. James were appointed co-opted members and Sir William Perry an honorary member. Messrs W. James, N. Martin and D. McGregor were appointed delegates to the Wellington Council.
