GIRONDE SCORES OVERDUE WIN

(By

“The Cynic.”)

The win of Gironde in the G. B. Starky Memorial, the principal race at Amberley last Saturday, did not come out of its turn, as the Gascony gelding had run two good thirds at the Riccarton Easter meeting, while at Timaru, he was badly served in the running on both days. Contrary to his usual fashion, Gironde was up with the' leaders all the way on Saturday, and he was full of running at the post at the end of a mile and a quarter. This was his first win from the stable of M. B. Edwards, and his second since he was purchased by Messrs G. and J. Burt early in the season. In both his successes the Gascony gelding was ridden by A. E. Ellis, the previous win being at Rangiora on Labour Day. Reappeared. The Pink Coat—Repudiation gelding, owned by Mr J. Richardson, of Dunedin, which recently arrived at Riccarton to be trained, has made his appearance on the tracks, and by his appearance it will not be long before he is racing. He got through a considerable amount of work under his owner before being sent north. The rising three-year-oid at once reminds one of the Paper Money type, he is evidently favouring his dam’s sire. Progress of Anagram. Anagram showed that he has forgotten little of the art of fencing by a good display at Takanini last week over four fences. An unsound gelding when in training previously, a lengthy spell, during which he was fired, may find him surviving a preparation, in which case he will pay his way over the battens during the winter. Makir Very Healthy. Mazir has made an appearance on the tracks, Takanini, and the Whirlwind gelding is in an exceptionally robust state, but is looking very healthy and is undoubtedly in the right order to commence a preparation for spring engagements. Mazir is a capable handicapper who, when right again, should take a very prominent part in the decision of the handicap events on spring programmes. To Race at.Ellerslie. Since scoring a double success at the Avondale meeting, Bronwen has not been subjected to any serious tasks, but is nevertheless bearing a very bright appearance, and is to race next at the Ellerslie meeting. Bronwen is a good winner this season, and another success will earn her promotion to open company. Being partial to soft going, as demonstrated by her win at Ellerslie in January, it would seem that the Cambria Park mare should earn her share at coming fixtures. Hall Mark Colt. The Hall Mark colt from Incense, purchased at the ..Sydney, sales by. Mr J. C. Crawford, of Palmerston North, arrived in New Zealand recently, and has been taken in hand by G. W. New, who trains Diamond Cutter for Mr Crawford. He is a well-built colt with plenty of substance, and will be easily identified by a white face and two very long white stockings on his hind legs. The name of Goldsmith was claimed for him, but was disallowed. Won Last Year. Good Hunting, who is topweight in the Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase at Gosborne on Saturday, won this race last year from Rapa Waiata, who was successful on the second day, when Good Hunting fell. Last year’s winner has raced only once since, being a poor third over hurdles at Gisborne in August. In Good Order. Royal Spades, even though he has not been executing any ■startling track gallops lately, leaves the impression that he is in excellent nick for the Poverty Bay meeting. His race form is better than his track efforts and the Hack Flat on Saturday should tune him up nicely for the Hack Cup on Monday. / Royal Spades was an unlucky runner at Waipukurau and he should not return empty-handed from Gisborne. Quilp did not have the best of luck at Hawera last weekend and, as he has come through his racing well, it would not surprise if he showed greatly improved form this weekend. Royal Spades is a half-brother to Isms, and his third dam is the imported Sirnonias, ancestress of Denise Orme, Fort William, Repeal and Multiplicity, all well known on this coast. Quilp is by Colossus from Sanguinaria, a half-sister to Royal Blood.

Spell for Royal Abb. The three-year-old Royal Abb has been turned out for a spell. By Posterity from Genesta. Royal Abb displayed marked promise in the spring, but his' form has failed to reach expectations, although he has registered one win and seven minor placings this season. Age may do. something for Royal Abb, and when he returns after his holiday he may be seen to more advantage, as he has given the impression that he may stay fairly well.

A Growing Team. The Ellerslie, trainer, R. S. Bagby, continues to add to his team, and his latest recruits are two rising two-year-olds. one a bay gelding by Autopay from Tc Money, and the other a filly by Gascony from Silver Grey. The gelding is closely in-bred. Autopay and Te Money being both being by Taper Money. Bagby's stable will be strong and present indications are that he will have at least 10 under his charge The juveniles he is working at present, include a half-brother, by Beau Pere. to High Caste, a colt by Phaleron Bay from Columba, a filly Beau Pere from Drolatique. a filly by Hunting Song from Wee Agnes, and a filly by Tiderace from Aureate.

May Develop. Although Shanghai Lily is still a maiden, indications are that the Lord Warden— Malmsey three-year-old will develop useful form up to a mile or mile and a quarter for her ownertrainer, J. B. Pearson. A third and three seconds in her last four starts at distances from six furlongs up to a mile and a quarter is promising form on which to calculate her early prospects. She is slow to find her feet, a point against her in six-furlong races, but she should soon get on the winning list over a longer journey.

Good Record. New Ferry, who figures on the minimum in the Steeplechase at Gisborne on Saturday, is not a very widelyknown jumper, but his record is good —he has had one start for one win. This Autumn gelding won the Ferguson Gold Cup Steeplechase at Gisborne in August by 20 lengths, and was easing up at the finish. He was the outsider of the field of five starters. Friesland Sore. Friesland was unable to full Egmont engagements on account of going lame. This was bad luck for O. Cox. who had him in good order. The trouble, which is a front fetlock, has his trainer a mt puzzled, as there is no heat in the joint, and it is not the usual splint. Bachelor King. Since his return to active work at Takanini Bachelor King had made rapid progress and is once again nearing his best form. A proved mud lark, this sprinter promises to take a hand in the decision of winter sprint events, and if all goes well in the interim he will probably make a reappearance at the Waikato meeting.
