BIBLE SOCIETY

, ADDRESS BY ORGANISER. Tuesday afternoon saw a very happy gathering of ladies at the home of Mrs F. E. T. Ractliffe at Masterton South to meet the organising secretary of the British and Foreign Bible Society, Mrs Violet Wakelin, of Wellington, who is speaking in various districts of Mastertbh this week, on the activities of the Society With which she is associated.

Mrs T. Macßae opened the meeting and introduced the speaker. Mrs Wakejin, who had already met some of the ladies at a meeting held earlier in the year in Masterton, was very gratified by the attendance and enthusiasm shown. She outlined the work of the Society overseas, giving details of the activities and results in many countries of the world. The fact that £lOOO per day was expended on the good work of distributing the Word of God to all races, and that the monetary return was but a fraction of this amount was stressed and the obvious need for generous donations was pointed out. Several ladies offered their services for collecting and the hope was expressed that when, in the near future, the annual collection is made, Masterton residents will support to the utmost the efforts of these ladies who give their time and energies so willingly to a cause, which is recognised by all who realise the value of Bible reading, as a most important and necessary one. The gathering was brought to a very pleasant close by an appetising afternoon tea served by Mrs Ractliffe and her daughter. Mrs Wakelin tendered her thanks to Mrs Ractliffe for her hospitality, to Mrs Aplin for her secretarial work during the year and to the devoted band of collectors to whom the Society owes its continued existence.
