SOME USEFUL HINTS. When making a custard from custard powder, whip the mixture well.. The whipping makes the custard lighter and better flavoured. Cheese will not become mildewed if wrapped in a cloth that is kept moistened with vinegar. Another method is to put a lump of sugar close to the cheese. Mint may be stored by chopping it up finely and pouring boiled vinegar over it in a wide-mouthed bottle. Keep the bottle corked. Even treacle can be weighed on the kitchen scales without causing any difficulty if flour is first sprinkled over the pan of the scales. If you require the white of an egg, make a hole and let the white drip out. The yolk will keep fresh for several days if covered with cold water in a cup or other vessel. In wet weather put a small piece of blotting paper in the bottom of the salt-cellar to keep the salt dry. If you have a real working sewingroom, fix strong tape along a wall. Hang up your patterns and bits of material on this “life-line.” It will save a lot of confusion.
