ANOTHER RACE FOR DICTATE

(By

“The Cynic.”)

Despite his run of exasperating placing on important events this season, Dictate has collected £lOOO in stakes. He was to have been turned out, but, after his good races at Timaru, he is to have bnocher race before his spell, at the Ashburton meeting, which will be held at Riccarton on Saturday. Fascinator. Fascinator introduced the colours of another woman owner at Amberley on Saturday. Fascinator, who is by Nightmarch from Charmilia, dam of Charmeuse, .is now owned by Mrs T. Stone of Christchurch, and is trained by H. Nurse. This was Fascinator’s first race ,and she shaped very encouragingly. Good Performer. Black Marlin, a Franklin winner, was a good performer over hurdles and country a couple of seasons ago. He showed a return to his best form in the Onewhero Steeples, and will now come into favour for the big jumping events to be decided later on during the winter. Cometarium. Cometarium, who was destroyed after his fall at Pukekoho on Saturday, was a five-year-old gelding by Sur-veyor-Lady Comet. He was • a halfbrother to Lady England, and Yed Prior is his full-sister. He was bred by Mr B. Brewer, but raced by Mr R. A. McKinley. Last winter at Wanganui he showed a lot of promise on the flat and looked such a likely sort for jumping that inquiries were made for his purchase, but he was not for sale. His dam is a half-sister to Tenacious, a good jumper a few years ago, and also to that great steeplechaser Billy Boy. . In Work. H. Nurse has Cottingham back on the track. Cottingham has done- a lot of exercise on the roads, and it should not take much galloping to fit him for a race. He was a good class hurdler and is being prepared to compete in steeplechases this winter. Palmyra, another of Nurse’s team, is to be tried over hurdles. Already she has demonstrated that jumping will be no trouble to her. To Be Raced Across Country. s Courtyard is to race over hurdles at the Ashburton meeting, and then start off his steeplechasing career at Timaru. Courtyard has been responsible for some attractive schooling efforts lately, and trainer A. McMullan holds the view that he will be a success over the big country. The Wellington Steeplechase is the principal race in view of Courtyard. McMullan has also taken Frontage and Gasmask in hand once again. Botn are destined for jumping careers, but they will need to improve considerably on anything they have done to'dale-to-be. much-good. • Minority. Majority's half-brother, by Foxbridge, who has been named Minority, is now among the daily workers at New Plymouth, and he appears to be making good progress. Night Raid Youngsters. The Night Raid—Lady Burleigh colt in H. Gray’s stable at New Plymouth has been named Nightbeam, and the Lytup colt, by the same sire, has been named Night Pilot. In France. l Hon Peter Beatty, who won the English Derby with Bois Roussel last year, and made another lucky purchase has bought land in Normandy, in France and is starting a stud farm there. Other,-British owners with stud farms in France are Lord Derby and Lady Granard, the Aga Khan, Mr G. Guinness, Mr C. Hobson and Mr E. Esmond. Traveltalk. Traveltalk, the yearling half-brother by Bulandshar to Gay Son, has joined G. W. Green’s establishment at Hastings. Indications are that he will not be as tall as Gayest Son, being built more on the lines of Gay Son. Yogi. The younger brother to Peerless, who will race as Yogi, has yet to gallop. Not for many years has Hawke’s Bay boasted a finer type of thoroughbred, and it is widely believed that the gelding will be the Derby and Leger horse of next season. Baran. Baran’s spring engagements were to have included the Australian Derby. With that trip still in view his trainer intends keeping the son of Bulandshar going for early trials before a definite decision is made. Foxton Meeting. The winter meeting of the Foxton Racing Club will be held at Awapuni racecourse on Saturday. May 27. The stakes have been considerably increased, and the single pool betting system will be in operation. Nominations will close next Friday at 9 p.m., and the acceptances will close on May 24 with the secretary, Mr J. Newton, Foxton. For Australia. A bay colt by Bulandshar from Vosage (Limond-Veal), has recently been broken in at the Karamu Stud, and he is shortly to enter Sid Reid’s establishment. Later he will be sent to his owner, Mr E. J. Watt, in Australia. Gold Wren’s Progress. Since racing at the Riverton Easter Meeting. Gold Wren has gone on the right way and the manner in which he has stood up to work has greatly pleased his trainer. The Songbird gelding appears to have overcome the ur.soundness which troubled him before Easter, and while he may not put in an appearance at the Southland Winter Meeting, it is probable that he will be prepared for the Otago Steeplechase and other important jumping events ahead. Lowenberg back in Work. Lowenberg is back in work at Hawera after a long spell and is now an inmate of W. H. Dyer's stable. A report states that the Lord Quex gelding appears to have thrown off, the lameness which has kept him off the scene all the season.

First Success. Philibun, a winner at the Nelson meeting, is a four-year-old half-sis-ter to Philamor to Roy Bun, and is owned by her breeder, Mr T. E. Coates of Greymouth, for whom she is trained at Riccarton by M. Conza. Name Claimed. The name of Cushla’s Last has been claimed for the three-year-old Some Spree—Cushla filly, who is being prepared at Trentham by B. V. Carruthers for the same partnership as races Bisect. Sister to Symcony. The Psychology mare Symballo had no more foals after Symcony and The Crooner till the season before last, and her rising two-year-old daughter by Gascony, thus a full-sister to the brilliant Symcony has been named Symbol. Attractive Filly. One of the ' most attractive rising two-year-old fillies seen for some time is Beaucoup, who has recently made her appearance on the tracks at Ellerslie. Bred by her owner-trainer, Mr C. M. Emanuel, Beaucoup, who is a daughter of Beau Pere and Volapia, comes from the same family as Capris (winner of the A.J.C. Epsom Handicap), Deputy Ruler, and Royal Tea. Youngsters. Two youngsters from the Koatanui Stud, /both geldings, will be taken in hand by W. Rayner, at Wanganui, after the Egmcnt Meeting. One is by Ringmaster from Midinette and will race as Ringcraft. The other named curtain is by Posterity from Curtain, and is a half-brother to Smoke Screen. Error in Dividend Calculation. An error in the calculation of place dividends was made at Hawera on Saturday in the race in which Little Ruse and Dawn Star dead-heated for third place. Instead of dividing the place pool into four equal parts the calculation was made on the ordinary 33 1-3 per cent to each place, and the third portion was then divided again between the dead-heaters, so that they each received 16 2-3 per cent instead of 25 per cent. The rule on the subject is quite clear, and is published by authority in all race books. The place pool is to be divided equally' among the horses that are in the places, notwithstanding that a dead-heat may increase the placed horses beyond the usual three. It is understood also that a special memorandum has been issued by the Internal Affairs Department on this point, so it is difficult to see how Saturday’s mistake should in the first instance have been made, and in the second been allowed to pass. ‘ ASHBURTON RACES ACCEPTANCES- FOR SATURDAY.
