MAURICE CHEVALIER
HOW HE ADOPTED A STRAW HAT. Maurice Chevalier, who joined in a cross-Channel exchange broadcast in March with Gracie Fields, has a precious possession in his straw hat, which is English made. It is his stock in trade, and Maurice Chevalier without his straw hat perched jauntily on the side of his head is unthinkable. Maurice has ever a warm spot in his heart for England, for he owes the beginning of his success to a visit he made to London. Chevalier began as a red-nosed countryman comedian, but he felt that he needed something to distinguish him from the general run of music hall comics. He had an inspiration. and while “resting” he bought a return ticket to London. There he visited music halls and in one was struck by a singer of comic songs who was immaculately dressed 'and wore a straw hat. He immediately invested almost all his remaining cash in a well made English tailored suit and a straw hat. and on his return to Paris Maurice Chevalier stepped on to the stage and the road to fortune in his new English-made outfit. Chevalier is probably the greatest music hall artist France has ever had. and at the Casino de Paris he can hold an audience for an hour and then have them still asking vociferously for more.
