YOUNG FARMERS
CARTERTQN CLUB ACTIVITIES. ARRANGEMENTS FOR DEBATING CONTEST. (“Times-Age” Special,) The May meeting of the Carterton Young Farmers’ Club was held in the P. and A. Rooms last Tuesday night. The chairman, Mr A. D. Fisher, presided oyer an attendance of 25 mem-. bers. Final arrangements were made for the club’s dance to be held af Barkvale on May 8. In order to select a team qf three to visit Tinu; on May 18. to meet the local team in the first round of the 1939 debating contest, two debates were held. Some very good arguments were put forward by all four teams and the speakers are to be congratulated on their efforts. “That the increased mechanisation of the farm is in the best interests of the country,” was the subject debated by the “A” and “B” teams. The affirmative was taken by the “B” team —Messrs B. Brasell, T. McKenzie and D. Ross —and they gained a narrow victory over the “A” team —Messrs M. Knutson, C. Bliss and A. Deller. “That speed is the master of man,” was argued by the “Q” and “£)’* teams. The “D” team took the affirmative and was declared the winners on the vote of the meeting. The “D” team was Messrs S. Fisher, M. Thompson and E. D. Williams. The negative was taken by Messrs L. Renall, T. Orr and T. Ward. At the conclusion of the debate Messrs M. Knutson, L. Renall .and B. Brasell with Mr E. D. Williams as reserve, were chosen to represent the club. Supper was then served. EKETAHUNA CLUB. The monthly meeting of the Eketahuna and Districts Young Farmers’ Club was held in the Niseaha Hall on Monday, May 1. Mr F- 8.. Rossiter was in the chair. During the evening. there was much discussion on the forthcoming debate with the Alfredtoji Young, Farmers* Club. The subject chosen for the debate was: “That tractors are more economical than the horse.” The local club decided to take the negative. The following were elected to speak: E. M. Wright (leader), F. B. Rossiter and J. Hawk-ins. It was decided to invite Mr A. S. Hely, of. the W.E.A- movement, to speak at the next monthly meeting. The secretary gave a short report on the arrangements for the euchre tournament that is tq be held during the winter months.
