FREE SCHOOL BOOKS
TRUST DOING GOVERNMENT’S JOB. STATEMENT AT LAST NIGHT’S MEETING. The opinion that in providing free school books for primary school children the Trust Lands Trust was doing a job that rightly belonged to the Government, was expressed by Mr A. Donald, a member of the Wellington Education Board, at last night’s annual meeting of the Trust.
During the past nine years, Jie said, not a single application had been received by the board from Masterton headmasters for free books for necessitious cases. The Trust had spent £lOO last year doing what the Government should be. It had been said that it was more difficult, to get 3d from a Masterton parent for a book than it was to get 5s in other districts. Mr E. G. Eton: "Does Mr Donald suggest that the Masterton parents are a ‘mingy’ lot? Ido not think any of them would begrude 3d.” Mr A. O.Jones said he thought the headmasters were using their discretion and giving free books and stationery mainly to necessitous cases.
