“YOU NEVER KNOW”

ART UNION DRAWN FIRST PRIZE TO WHANGAREI. EXCITING CONDITIONS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The first prize of £2OOO in the “You Never Know” art union, drawn in the Masonic Hall, Wellington, yesterday, was won by the holders of ticket No 090614, bearing the pseudonym “Optimists” and the address “Ewings Road, Whangarei.” The second prize was drawn by J. W. Newport, Takaka. The highest prize to remain in Wellington was the fifth, £3OO, drawn by Joe Marsh, Te Aro Post Office. The third prize, like the first, went to North Auckland, to Warkworth. The fourth and seven th. went to Canterbury and the sixth to Dunedin. Luck caused the draw to be more exciting than usual. Seven marbles, each representing one of the first seven prizes, are placed in a barrel in charge of a police sergeant. The method is to find the ticket number first and then to draw a marble from the sergeant’s barrel to find 'the prize that number has drawn. Last night after six prizes had been drawn the first prize marble remained in the barrel, so that as the last number was slowly read out those fallowing the drawing knew that the holder of it was to have £2OOO. The first ticket number drawn proved to belong to a ticket that was known not to have been sold, and those listening to see if their tickets had drawn the prize had a second chance. This time the ticket had been .sold, to somebody in Whangarei. The prize list is as follows: — First Prize—£2ooo. 090614, “Optimists,” Ewings Road, Whangarei. Second Prize—£looo. 179651, J. W. Newport, Takaka. Third Prize-r-£5OO. , 144674, “Charge,” Warkworth. Fourth Prize—£4oo. 114082, E. J. Harris, Springston R.D., Canterbury. Fifth Prize—-£3OO. 115414, Joe Marsh, Te Aro Post Office, Wellington. Sixth Prize—£2oo. 035593, “What a Government,” Dunedin. Seventh Prize—£loo. 146387, “That’s Right,” Timaru. A £5 prize was won by “No One,” Pahiatua.
