European Refugees.
“I am informed by a foreign newspaper correspondent, a friend of mine, that, if the Dominions do not receive some refugees, the name of those Dominions will be mud in Europe," said the Rev Dr R. C. Gillie, relieving minister at St David’s Church, addressing members of the Auckland Rotary Club. Dr Gillie, who has been in New Zealand for the last four months, has occupied the positions of Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of England and president of the Free Church Council. The question of refugees, said Dr Gillie, was raised in a discussion of population trends. Much had been done for refugees on the Continent, but he was sorry to see that Britain had received only 19,000 up to the present. Auckland Nurses 111. With 62 members of the nursing staff suffering from influenza, it has been necessary to restrict admissions to the Auckland Hospital to cases of acute and. urgent type. This decision was made yesterday and the medical superintendent, Dr. J. W. Craven, stated that the bookings made for admission had been stood over, except where immediate treatment, was necessary. The absence of 62 nurses has made the staffing of the hospital extremely difficult, as well as presenting a problem in itself. A number of young women who have been affected by illness have been transferred into wards; others are being nursed in their own homes, and the remainder are confined to their beds in the nurses’ home. Some men can listen to their wives and the radio at the same time. Others can’t. That's why they switch on the radio.
