FEATURES OF MAY ISSUE. James Cowan takes his readers back ninety years to a very interesting journey of Donald Maclean (Land Purchase Commissioner) and the Rev Richard Taylor (a missionary) to a Maori settlement on a branch of the Wanganui River. Ken Alexander, in “Notes on Knowers” has some delightful gibes at a widespread type of person;, commonly known as “the Know-all.” O. N. Gillespie, continuing his big feature articles on New Zealand industries, gives some astonishing facts about the cult of tobacco and its conversion into cigarettes and packages for pipes. Neville R. Lowers brightly describes the making of the Centennial film —a spectacular presentation of a century of New Zealand history. Mona Gordon has a very go6d treatise on Captain Cook memorials, showing how the famous navigator has been honoured in various countries. In “Thirty' Years on the Footplate,” Frances Brebner worthily sets out the railway experiences of Mr M. Johnston, well-known in Rugby football circles. Joyce West, in “The Old Brave Days of Opunake,” recalls the troublous times of the Taranaki Wars. Rosaline Redwood has a thrillful story “White Bread and Treacle,” based on the old Maori days. Dorothy Esher strikes some new notes on the majestic scenery of Milford Sound. Othei 1 features include a helpful section for women, notes and comments on books and authors and a well-informed commentary on sport. About sixty illustrations are distributed through the sixty-four pages.
