MASTERTON SAVAGE CLUB

FIRST KORERO OF SEASON. AN ENJOYABLE PROGRAMME. In the unavoidable absence of Immediate Past Chief E. J. Jenkins, Past Chief J. A. Kennedy inducted in true Savage fashion the new officers of the Masterton Savage Club for 1939 season at the opening Korero held in the Savage Club rooms on Saturday night. They were: Chief D. A. Pickering, Deputy Chief V. Wilton, Chief Scribe T. E. Handcock, Musical Director C. W. Kerry, and the full numoer council members. Mr Kennedy made apt reference to the capabilities of each officer. Chief Pickering presented Past Chief Kennedy with a Council Badge in honour of his long and valued service to Savagery. Apologies for absence were received from Past Chief Booth and several members. At an appropriate interval in the programme Chief Pickering presented Savage P. L. Gully with a handsome case of pipes in honour of his long period of useful service in the interests of the club. Savage Gully, in replying, said that he was taken completely by surprise, at the presentation, and thanked club members for their kind thought in connection herewith. He hoped that he would long be spared to help and also enjoy membership of the Savage Club. The programme for the evening commenced with a song by Savage Mexted, being followed with a thumbnail sketch by Savages Kennedy and Hancock. Songs by Savage J- P. Macpherson and "Fish stories” by Savage W. G. Perry brought the programme to the interval where the visitors were introduced and welcomed in true Savage style. An enjoyable interlude was the arrival of “Scotty” MacKinnon, Max Reddy, Cl-ive Noble and Stanley Mac Kay from the Stanley Mac Kay Gaieties Company. Short though their time, their items were thoroughly enjoyed, they having to hurry back to the Opera House for their own "turns.” The programme was continued after supper with items by the Savage Club Orchestra, followed by vocal solos by Savage O. Hemmingsen. Savage E. F. Wilson provided ’cello solos and the programme was brought to a conclusion with a short sketch by members of the Dramatic Club ’ (Savages M. Curtin and O. Hemmingsen), entitled “If I Were You.” Arrangements are under way for the re-establishment of the Glee Club and the first practice will be held in the club rooms next Thursday.
