BRITAIN & RUSSIA
LONDON PRESS OPINIONS
REPORTED REJECTION OF ALLIANCE.
SOME TALK OF HALTING DIPLOMACY.
By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received This Day. 1.10 p.m.) LONDON, May 7.
The “News Chronicle" and “Daily Herald" agree that an Anglo-Russian alliance is essential to deter Herr Hitler.
The “Daily Herald” guardedly voices a belief that Mr Chamberlain rejected a Russian plan for an alliance in favour of a unilateral Russian guarantee of Eastern European States and insists that he should promptly clarify the situation.
The “News Chronicle" also suspects British diplomacy of halting, despite the urgency for a peace alliance created by the German and Italian agreement. and foresees the danger of a deadlock in the Anglo-Russian negotiations.
The “Daily Mail” and “Daily Telegraph” consider that the German-Ital-ian pact does not change the situation.
“The Times" agrees that the Ger-man-Italian pact does not alter the situation, and cites current diplomatic gossip which indicates the possibility that Italy, genuinely desiring a peaceful settlement, is influencing Germany in that direction.
