BASKETBALL
WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION. SATURDAY’S MATCHES. The Association’s matches were continued on Saturday last, resulting as follows: — A Grade. High School Old Girls beat lona, 10-9. Stars beat College A, 17-9. College B beat Collegians, 12-11. B Grade. Hospital beat College C, 22-4. Carterton beat Technical Old Girls, 30-4. lona beat College Colts, 29-4. Stars beat College D, 27-10. NOTES ON THE PLAY. lONA v HIGH SCHOOL OLD GIRLS. On the whole the day was one of close matches in the A grade and uneven ones in the B grade. The win of H.S.O.G. over lona was somewhat unexpected, though the faulty shooting of lona was consistent throughout the game. P. Hanley played the best field game and M. Brady shot best, but altogether this third failed badly. The lona centre worked well and here M. Eastwood was outstanding again in quickness and energy. R. Eastwood among the lona defenders played a very strong game. H.S.O.G. lost on long throws many times, and sometimes only one centre handled the ball. It was noticeable in this match that, although the new rules should prevent bodily contact, there was a great deal of bumping. When endeavouring to intercept the ball, girls frequently twisted side on, and bumped heavily into an opponent also endeavouring to intercept; also blocking was in evidence, i.e., girls holding arms in front of tin opponent’s body. The actual shooting was very bad in this match, as it was in most of the matches. STARS v COLLEGE A. Stars deserved their win over College A, not so much for superior field play, but for better (though not out-
standingly good) shooting. In the first half in particular the College forwards were very unreliable. I. Shoosmith scored most of the goals, though P. Baskiville brought off one brilliant shot. The College centres left the Stars centres well behind, but often the ball failed at the line. The Stars forwards combined very well, but occasionally passed too much instead of shooting. Unnecessary passing in the circle, brought about presumably by a sudden attack of inferiority complex, lost this team the ball several times. E. Jones and O. Lysaght combine very well. C. Shearer (College) played a very strong defence game, but must beware of bodily contact. M. Carroll brought off several fine interceptions in the second half. A steadily useful game, enlivened by flashes of brilliant interception, was played by M. Gadsby. COLLEGIANS v COLLEGE B. The Collegians v College B game was very exciting, the result being in doubt right up to the last. College remained just a little behind until within about 6 minutes of time, when two shots from P. Pratt equalled the score, and then one from R. Sharp placed College ahead. This latter player’s quickness and determination were excellent. For College defence K. Ross played an excellent game—a reliable player and one who uses her head. Collegians played one short in the centre where H. Howes and B. Linton had a very strenuous game. lONA v COLLEGE COLTS. The match in which the College Colts play always attracts great interest and this game little team, although outplayed by the bigger and more experienced lona girls, stuck to their strenuous task right to the end. In particular M. Petersen, H. Douglas and A. Stains showed speed and great promise as future players. The lona team is a< good one. In the forward third C. Talbot and K. Brady shot well and there was very pleasing combination in this third. Considering the greater height of their opponents the Colts should have avoided the long passes which often lost them the ball. POSSIBLES v PROBABLES. At the. conclusion of the matches a Possibles v Probables trial was held and the selectors watched various combinations of players. The outstanding need in the Wairarapa is one or two reliable goal-throwers; the outlook at present is somewhat deplorable. Girls are also asked to note that players who will not observe the rules against bumping, blocking and stepping with the ball are not suitable candidates for a representative team. MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. REPRESENTATIVE TEAM FUND. At an executive meeting of the Wairarapa Basketball Association, Miss O. R. -Sutherland was in the chair. It was decided to donate 10s each to Carterton and Belvedere for travelling expenses to their Saturday matches. It was also decided that teams travelling to Greytown need not pay the 2s 3d per team on the Saturday they had to travel. Representative fund. —Because of the heavy expenses for the A representative team to go to the N.Z. tournament at Invercargill, the Association decided to have several shop days and teams would be responsible as follows: —First shop day, Saturday, June 3, Technical Old Girls and Wairarapa College teams; June 21 or June 24, Collegians and lona. July 15, Stars and High School Old Girls; Greytown at Greytown; Carterton and Belvedere at Carterton. Donations of produce, cakes, jams and sweets from those who are interested will be called for on those days if Miss O. R. Sutherland is notified.
The executive expressed thanks to Mr and Mrs F. J. Kilmister and to Mr J. Hanley for donations and also to the Wairarapa Referees’ Association for good work in training young referees.
