WOMEN’S WELFARE LEAGUE
ANNUAL MEETING IN MASTERTON MISS KUMMER RE-ELECTED PRESIDENT The eleventh annual meeting of the Women’s National Welfare League was held yesterday afternoon at the Midland Hotel. Those present were Miss Kummer (in the chair), Mesdames T. Jordan. J. Caselberg, H. H. Pavitt, S. Fletcher, H. E. Pither, S. L. P. Free, R. C. Drummond. G. G. Tolhurst, W. Cruickshank; S. Coradine, H. P. Harrison, B. Iveson, E. Staniforth, T. F.‘ Watson, H. Brisco, A. W. McKenzie, S. J. Martin, F. Garland, L. Hunter, R. Page, E. J. Coleman, A. J. Stewart, F. Reynolds. F. Daniell, Horne, D. M. Graham, W. R. Birch, D. K. McKenzie, H. W. Thompson, J. O. Thomson, G. McCracken, Misses S. Mace, Todd, Beetham (2), Barton (2), Guild, Burns, Jackson, C. Cameron, Mesdames H. P. Glen, Kilgour, Misses M. Boddington, M. Barrer, Sister Brown. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames J. Robertson, Irving, E. Hodder, J. Mcßae, W. McKenzie, W. Wardell, W. Andrew, R. Miss Kummer welcomed the visitors and new members.
A vote of sympathy was passed with four members who are ill, three being in the Hospital. The annual report and balance sheet was taken as read and adopted. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Miss Kummer (reelected); vice-presidents, Mesdames T. Jordan, S. Fletcher, R. C. Drummond, H. E. Pither; hon secretary, Mrs H. P. Glen; hon treasurer, Mrs A. W. Charleson; hon auditor, Mr Norman James (re-elected); convenors of committees, Public Hospital, Mrs G. G. Tolhurst with the following committee, Mesdames Drummond, Pavitt, Page, Misses Guild and Bellis; Buchanan Home, Mrs S. J. Munn; Blind Institute, Mrs H. E. Pither; Lighthouses, Mrs A. E. Kilgour; Social Welfare work, Mrs A. W. McKenzie.
Miss Boddington was made a life members of the League on the motion of Mrs Tolhurst seconded by Mrs R. C. Drummond, in appreciation of her service since the inception of the League. Mrs Tolhurst spoke on the accurate and conscientious work done by Miss Boddington during her many years as treasurer of the League.
' 'Mrs Munn stated that she had arranged that on May 18 a visit would be paid to the Buchanan Home. Cars, visitors, and performers are to be left to Mrs Munn to arrange.
Mrs McKenzie reported that she had attended four cases during April in connection with the Social Welfare Work, help being given where needed.
Mrs Pither referred to the work amongst the blind. More sellers for art union tickets were wanted, she stated. The death of one of the blind folk was reported, a wreath being sent from the Institute.
Mrs Tolhurst reported on visits paid to the Masterton Hospital during. April. Teas had been provided for the T.B. Ward, and plenty of literature had been sent for distribution. Mrs Tolhurst then outlined a proposal that a junior auxiliary be formed. A number of young people were present who
were were willing to join the auxiliary nursing service.
A Junior Auxiliary of the Women's National Welfare League was formed, the auxiliary to have its own president, secretary and other officers. Miss Brown, Tutor Sister of the'Public Hospital, was introduced to .the meeting and spoke on the work of the auxiliary of the nursing service and V.A.D. work in peace time. She outlined the work to be undertaken by those forming an auxiliary, So as to be organised and disciplined in case of a national disaster. Miss Brown thanked the League on behalf of Matron Barnett (who was unavoidably absent) for all they had done for the Hospital during the year. Mrs Tolhurst proposed *a vote of thanks to Miss Brown for her able address. This was seconded by Miss Kummer and carried.
Miss Brown was presented with a shoulder spray by Mrs Garland. Mrs McKenzie (St John Ambulance Brigade) spoke in reference to the nursing scheme, as the junior members must take a course of training with the St John Ambulance Nursing Division before they could do any V.A.D work. Miss Kummer thanked Mrs McKenzie.
During afternoon tea Miss Kummer, on behalf of the League, presented Miss Boddington, who has retired from the treasureship of the League after 11 years, with a posy and envelope containing a small appreciation of her work. Miss Boddington suitably responded. The secretary, Mrs Kilgour, was presented with a posy and a gift from the president with grateful thanks for her work during the year. AH the officers and convenors were the recipients of floral tributes and all outgoing officers thanked for their work during 1938. One resignation was received and accepted with regret. Ten new members were enrolled.
