OLD SURREY NOW MORE SOLID

(By

“The Cynic.”)

Old Surrey locks more solid now that at any other stage of his career, and has done particularly well since he chased Wildflower home at Feilding. He has a penchant for easy tracks and the next few weeks should find him adding materially to his winning account in handicaps around the district meetings. Royal Choice. Royal Choice has been a disappointment as a fiat performer, but his initial displays over the schooling hurdles at Awapuni have been quite satisfactory. Laugh Prince is represented by a useful jumper in Princess Isabel and in this department Royal Choice may make good. Resumed. Smooger, the three-year-old Lord Quex-Fondle gelding, has resumed work after a good spell. This close relation to Cuddle was very gross when in training before and he is likely to improve with age. For the Winter. Ivar and, Kathbella have been enjoying an easy time since their return from the Auckland and Avondale meetings, but, as they have not had a great deal of racing this season, they may be kept going during the winter meetings. Social Credit. The Inflation-Shuffler two-year-old Social Credit, who was prepared by “Pen" Russell, at Woodville prior to that trainer's departure for Australia has joined G. W. B. Greene’s team at Hastings. Races Well. Mea Mea invariably races well at Otaki, and although he has been off the scene since his disappointed at Tauherenikau, he will be at home in the easy going and is likely th show a big improvement. Good Recovery. The Bulls-trained Play On was slightly sore at Faster, but the easing of the tracks has enabled him to make a good recovery and he promises to play an important part in the decision of the Ruakawa Handicap at Otaki on Saturday week. Play On won on this track in the spring and will be a staunch favourite. Aureus, his stable mate, will have to be respected in the Huia Handicap on her Easter form.. She has run her best races to date over slightly shorter distances, but there is no reason to suppose that seven furlongs will stop her. She, too, has a liking for the track and scored her first success there. Brilliant Boa. It is reported that Brilliant-Boa will join F. Shaw’s stable. This season Brilliant Boa has started 11 times, and his only placeci performance is a third to Fleet Stree and Hunting Chorus at the Birchwood Hunt meeting. Looked and Ran Badly. They were bad judges' of both form and condition, those punters who invested £llO 10s on The Surgeon’s chances in the hurdle race at Washdyke. He looked very jaded in the parade, and jumped and galloped just about as badly as he looked, finishing fully 150yds behind the winner. For a jumper The Surgeon is not an old horse, being only nine years old, but at last week’s meeting looked, finishing fully 150yds behind the field, at least 19. ' A Promising Two-Year-Old. Asia, winner of the Autumn-Stakes last week, put up an attractive performance in winning from No. 13 position at the barrier, a bad run from the five-furlong post on the Washdyke course. Her dam, Jewel of Asia, is an imported mare by Grosvenor from Ayesha 11., oy Ayrshire, and the dam of Sir John (also by Limond), who raced well in Australia. Jewel of Asia was purchased by her present owner at the 1938 national yearling sales at 350 gns. The Awarua Handicap. Foxlove, 7.4, suffered a narrow defeat by Alma 8.3 J in the Invercargill Cup. Foxlove meets the mare on 1311 b worse terms in the Awarua Handicap. Since the Invercargill Cup was run Foxlove has won three times and finished in a place in three other starts. In the Fiverton Cup, Foxlove 8.6. was second to Passaform, with Milford, 9.4, fourth, and Alma, 9.0, Wild Career, 8.13, and Peony Rose unplaced. Milford 9.0 won the Easter Handicap, with Wild Career 8.9 third and Alma 8.10 and Foxlove 8.7 unplaced. FoxloYe 8.7 won the Fiord Handicap from Milford 9.9 and the'unplaced lot included Galleon 8.7 and Ashaway 7.5 J. On the form displayed in th& Easter Handicap Milford goes up 51b and Foxlove 21b. Wild Career is dropped 31b and Alma 51b. Peony Rose is dropped 91b on what she carried in the Riverton Cup. Unlucky. King Gustavo was unlucky in both of his races at Washdyke. On the first day he started from nearly the outside of the barrier, and, missing the jump out, was well back until after entering the straight. He finished on strongly to take third money. On the second day he was lying in a handy position as he turned for home, but then got pushed out into the middle of the course, otherwise he would have finished in the money. Smart Hack. With two wins to his credit: in his two starts. Red Chief impresses as being one of the smartest; hacks in the Manawatu district, and he is assured of a big following in the Te Horn Handicap at Otaki. Ho appears to bo improving with every race. Aurora’s Love is likely to resume racing next Saturday, and if Jim Waller takes her to Otaki she will be makink her debut over the tall limber. This gallant little marc is a natural jumper and the bigger fences will hold no terrors for her. but she mity bo all the better for a race. Youngsters Broken In. The To Rapa trainer. A. C. .Tones, has broken in an attractive-looking rising two-year-old colt by Surveyor out of a full-sister to Mangani. Pinna. Another rising two-year-old, a bay filly by Whirlwind-Diversity, is engaging Jones' attention.

In Malaya. Most of the Now Zealand horses who were sent to race in Malaya 18 months or so ago were eased oil after their first four months on the testing ground of the turf during which nine of them won 14 races, but they began to re-ap-pear under colours at the Perak meetin gtowards the end of January, and during the first fortnight in February. Seven of them raced at that meeting, and. thought JNewzy was the only winner, place-money fell to others of them. Newzy had four starts at the meeting, and, after being third and second in the first two, won the next two. He is the gelding by Bambury from Pelagia, and these were his first successes since he won one of the “griffin” events last May. He is owned by Major Lindsay Vears. Among the others who were placed at the meeting were Marcheta 11. (Irish Lancer—Some Breeze). Princess Prim (Pink Coat—All Smiles), New Zealand (Paladin—Controversy), and Just My Luck (Paladin—Maharanui). Spelling. The two-yeail-old Chandlery, who opened his winning account in the Junior Maiden Handicap at Whangarei recently, has been turned out for a short spell before being prepared for next season’s racing. By Vaals from Ornamental, Chandlery is bred well enough to achieve further success and she may be capable over middle distances, when her powers are fully developed. RACING FIXTURES May 6—Egmont.
