BRITAIN’S ATTITUDE TO GERMANY STATEMENT BY PREMIER ENCIRCLEMENT CHARGES UNFOUNDED. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 12.35 p.m.) RUGBY, May 3. Replying in the House of Commons to a question whether Britain would be willing to give a guarantee to Germany similar to that given to Poland, on a reciprocal basis, in view of Herr Hitler’s charges of Britain’s encirclement policy, Mr Chamberlain, said his recent statements had made it quite clear that there was no foundation for charges that Britain had adopted a policy of encircling Germany, “What President Roosevelt proposed and what I understand Herr Hitler to have offered,” the Premier added, “is an exchange of assurances of non-aggression rather than a guarantee on a reciprocal basis, such as that given by Britain to Poland. The British Government certainly would be ready to consider proposals for an exchange of reciprocal assurances with Germany.”
