WAR LORD IN WORK AGAIN

(By

“The Cynic.”)

War Lord, the two-year-old colt by Lord Warden from Vennachar, has resumed work under H. R. Telford at Trentham. He was given two races only in the spring—one at Masterton and the other at Trentham. He was then considered a superior colt to Globe Trotter, but did not quite come up to expectations. He has developed into an attractive horse, and, on appearance, should do well in the new season. He is a brother to Gillie and Bellaghy, and a half-brother to a useful performer in Scratchmere Scar. He was bred by Messrs G. Fulton and G. A. Kain, and was bought by Mr R. H. Edkins at the Trentham sales last year for 300 guineas. First Success. Dracula, at his fourth start over hurdles, scored his first success as a jumper at Washdyke last Saturday. Unfortunatel, Dracula’s two previous placings brought him to a stage where his victory became expensive, as he had to carry lOst last Saturday and the race was only worth £lO5 to the winner. Dracula’s rapid rise in the weights was brought about by his carrying several pounds overweight the day he finished third at Riccarton. Shaping Well. Platter shaped so encouragingly in the Waverley Steeplechase that it looks as if this Tea Tray gelding will be hard to keep' out of the money in the steeplechases at Gisborne. Slight Injury. The well-bred but little-raced Arau-sio-Phenelophon gelding, The Tramp, who met with a slight injury after his fast finish into second place behind Laggard at Napier in the spring, has been working well at Greenmeadows under W. McKinnon’s care, and is booked for the Poverty Bay meeting. The Tramp is a good jumper and he leaves the impression that there will be more than one race for him this winter. Hack Prospect. The Takanini hack Hunter’s Rose Showed speed when she won at Rotorua in February and has been taken along quietly since. Taken out to race at Avondale, Hunter’s Rose bolted before the start and was withdrawn. She is bred to act in bad going'and as she looked well at Avondale may be a hack sprint prospect at winter meetings. ‘ Royal Dance. Since winning two hurdle races in brilliant style at Tauranga, nothing has been seen, of Royal Dance, who is likely to make his next appearance at Te Rapa. Recent winners, Airam, Stansted and Electric Spear, were behind Royal Dance when he won at Tauranga so that his form appears good. He is a brilliant galloper with the physique.fp.-majkgua top-class hurdler. As a Juniper. When Awhiowhip won in the bracelet class some time ago. he was hailed as a promising horse. However, he was a heavy-topped horse who proved hard to train, and after a good spell, he is to be tried as a jumper. Handy Customer. Improved by his spell during the autumn, that solid little gelding Sporting Gift leaves the impression that it would not take a great deal to bring. him up to his top form. Jim Manuel, his astute mentor, can usually get his charges right to win at the first time of asking and it would be wise to consider Sporting Gift if he is started at the Manawatu meeting this month. Back to Hdcks. Valdene competed in the chief events at Whangarei, but, in the better class, found a mile and a quarter too far for her. She is to return to the hack ranks at Pukekohe where she will be better suited by distance and class. Valdene won attractively at the last fixture at Pukekohe. Excellent Progress. Right Royal, a sturdy gelding by Illumination —Lady Seline, has made excellent progress since joining I. Tucker’s team at Ellerslie. Right Royal is to race at Pukekohe, but he gives the impression that it will be as a jumper that he will do best. His sire, Illumination, has become noted as a sire of successful jumpers. Paddon. A surprise 'entry at the Waikato meeting is that of Paddon in. tire Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase. In his day Paddon was a good winner’ on the flat and over hurdles, but he is now sixteen years old.

Gone to Sydney. The Woodville trainer. “Pen” Russell, took only Bronze Flight and Pen, across to Sydney with him recently when he made his usual winter trip to Australia. On very few trips has this good judge failed to win a few races and these rising three-year-olds have both shown ityPen .was an impressive winner at Tauherenikau at New Year and is a handsome colt by Acre from the Ab-surd-Oratress mare Windbag. A middle distance may not be beyond him. Bronze Flight is by Bronze Eagle from Lady Romeo (a sister to Sir Romeo), by Romeo from Lady Kerman, by the Marco horse Kerman. Bronze Flight is still a maiden, but he has shown sufficient to suggest that he wRI not be hard to place. Consistent.

The Oration-Flower Girl gelding Wananga has been taken over at Awapuni by Noel Voitre, who has recently obtained a training licence. Wananga has been a very consistent • performer and this six-year-old gelding is of the right conformation to make a jumper later on. Voitre is a brother to the late Keith Voitre and served his time with W. H. Dwyer, at Wanganui. A Handful. Raeburn has proved somewhat of a handful since joining Mrs A. W. McDonald’s • team at Awapuni, but he is undergoing a course of. corrective treatment. This big Colossus gelding has undoubted galloping ability and he may show something of his right form as a four-year-old. Bad Lluck. Sun Beau, a gelding by Sunnyform from Gorgeous, the dam of Peacock, who broke his leg when pulling up after a gallop a week ago last Sunday, was reported to have been a good galloper in the making. He was to have raced at Timaru last week, and having disposed of no less a trial horse than Lord Nuffield in a gallop, which was his last, his prospects, indeed, looked bright. He was in H. A. McDonald’s stable at Wingatui. MARLBOROUGH RACES ACCEPTORS FOR SATURDAY. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) BLENHEIM, May 3.
