Birch, entertained about seventy guests at a delightful buffet dinner at Mrs Beethan’s residence, “Highmore,” Lansdowne. The rooms were gay with chrysanthemums and autumn leaves and large bowls of hydrangeas, a most enjoyable time being spent. The wedding took place on Thursday, April 28, at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Wellington, of Agnes, daughter of Mr and Mrs lan Duncan, and Charles, son of Mrs MacDermott and the late Charles MacDermott, of Dublin, Ireland. The Rt Rev Monsignor Connolly celebrated Nuptial Mass, and pupils from St Mary’s Convent sang during the service. Mr Miles Watson attended the bridegroom as best man. Mr and Mrs G. C. Powell, of Makuri, gave a pleasant party on Saturday to celebrate the engagement of their younger son, Alan Erl, to Joyce Emilie, only daughter of Mr and Mrs W. Cole, of Havelock North. Whitta, proposed the toast of the engaged couple, and several others endorsed his remarks. Many, also, took this opportunity of wishing Miss Joyce Cole many happy returns of her birthday. A birthday cake was made by Mrs H. R. Whitta and cut by Mr Brian Owen, an old friend of the Cole family. Many friends came from Pahiatua, Al - fredton and Coonoor to the gathering.
