GREYTOWN
DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL. MEETING OF COMMITTEE. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Greytown District High School Committee was held last night, , there being present Messrs H. G. Carter (chairman), F. Defines (treasurer), J. Herod, H. C. Trotman, J. Morison, W. G. K. Wiggins, and the secretary (Mrs W. J. Knell). An application from the Girl Guides Association for the use of the school and grounds for a Guide camp in January, 1940, was granted, subject to the consent of the Education Board. The dental nurse reported as follows for April: “I commenced duty at Greytown on April 13. The total attendance was 123, total operations 240, and new entrants for the month, 3 The treasurer reported a credit balance of £B3 2s lOd. Accounts passed for payment amounted to £l3 13s 4d. The net proceeds for the sale of bottles was reported to have been £9 10s. The headmaster reported that nearly all the young trees in the nursery had been sold. The action of the chairman in purchasing an electric heater for the clinic was confirmed. The circular from the National Peace Council was received. '■ A vote of sympathy was passed to Miss Stephens (a member of the staff) on the bereavement she had recently sustained. The Education Board wrote stating that Messrs Trotman and Sons’ price had been accepted for chalk shelves. Mr E. Graham ; wrote tendering his resignation from the committee owing to his leaving the district. The secretary was instructed to write and thank Mr Graham for his past services. The question of filling the vacancy was held over till the next meeting. The headmaster’s report stated that the roll number was: primary, 299; secondary, 41. Mr Caradus, secondary inspector, it was stated, had visited the school during the month. After the business of the school committee had been completed, the chairman (Mr H. G. Carter) stated that they understood that their worthy secretary Mrs Knell, was having a birthday the next day. On behalf of the committee, he asked Mrs Knell to accept a small token of their esteem. Mr Carter then presented Mrs Knell with a “bridge set.” Mrs Knell thanked the committee for their kindly thought. FIRE AT PAPAWAI. OLD SCHOOL DESTROYED The Greytown Fire Brigade received a call at 11 p.m. last night to a fire which had broken out in the old Papawai School. The building belongs to the Maori College Reserve, and was tenanted by Mrs Maraunui, who is at present away in Rotorua. The Church of England Trustees had a large quantity of bale hay stowed in part of the building and tnis was destroyed. A party of Maoris from the Pa managed to save some of Mrs Maraunui’s furniture. Owing to there being no water handy, the Fire Brigade was unable to be of any assistance. ST LUKE’S CHURCH. MEETING OF PARISHIONERS. The annual meeting of the Parishioners of St Luke’s, Greytown, was held on Monday evening when the Rev Canon Sykes presided over a good attendance. The vicar’s report stated that throughout the year all services had been well maintained. The Rev W. F. Stent of Carterton and Mr T. N. Smallwood had taken services during the vicar’s absence. The officers for the ensuing year are: Vicar’s warden, Mr I. Blissett; people’s warden, Mrs A. D. Burch; vestry, Messrs D. C. Fairbrother, F. Wood, A. H. York, E. Collier, W. H. Day, W. J. Knell, H. Trotman, W. Tully, and Miss Stephens; auditor, Mr H. Walden; Synodsman, Mr T. N. Smallwood; hall committee, Mesdames Balfour and Everett and Mr I. Blissett. A vote’of thanks was accorded the outgoing vestry. Reference was made to the good work that had been done for the church by Mr arid Mrs E. Graham, who have left the district. A vote of thanks was accorded the Ladies Guild for their donation of £l5O towards the vicarage fund. TOWN LANDS TRUST. ELECTION OF MEMBERS. Messrs F. Dennes, H. G. Carter and J. W. Barnard have been elected to fill /the vacancies on the Greytown Town Lands Trust. Vital Statistics. The Vital Statistics for Greytown for April are as follow: —Births/ 4; marriages, 1; deaths, 7. Rainfall Record. The rainfall registered in April was threee inches.
