MINIATURE RIFLE CLUB. WEEKLY COMPETITION. ("Times-Age” Special.) The weekly competition of the Carterton Miniature Rifle Club was held in the State Theatre last night. There yas a large attendance and a teams match was fired between teams selected by the captain and vice-captain. The result was as follows (7 shots with optional sighter):— Captain’s team —S. Dwane 70, W. Press 70, N. F. Teal 68, C. J. DeLacey 66, F. O’Keefe 65, Les Tunnicliffe 65, E. Jones 61, M. Pickett 59, O. Daysh 57, Miss Scott 54, J. Dully 53, L. Chew 52, K. Bain 49; total 789. Vice-captain’s team —A. Pinfold 67, R. Hawker 66, L. DeLacey 66, G. Sewell 66, H .Murrell 65, J. Bridge 6% I. Sutherland 64, H. Torrey 63, Mrs DeLacey 62, G. Goodin 61, L. Fitzgerald 51, H. Townsend 47, G. Lowe 37; total 779. Fire Brigade Social. The annual smoke concert of the Carterton Fire Brigade will be held in the Fire Brigade Hall, on Saturday. Among the visitors will be the President of the Fire Brigades’ Association, Mr C. .H. Carey, of Patea, and Mi’ F. J. Watt, secretary of the Association, from Auckland. Representatives from Petone, Hutt and many other brigades will also be present. Dance & Euchre Party. Under the auspices of the'Carter ton branch of the Farmers’ Union a dance and euchre tourney will be held in the Parkvale Hall tonight. Free cars will leave the Carterton Post Office for the function. The prices of admission are advertised. Clean-up Week. The Carterton Borough workmen have been busy since Monday carrying out a clean-up of the borough, and many loads of rubbish have been removed to the borough pit in Brooklyn road. Influenza Prevalent. There is at present an epidemic of influenza, and pneumonia cases in Carterton and the district. In some instances 'the patients are very ill. . Personal Items. Writing to a friend in Carterton, Mr H. H. L. Meyrick, who is an inmate of “Braemar” Hospital, Wanganui, says that he is still confined to his bed, but is entertaining hopes of being allowed up shortly. He is slowly improving in health. Mr E. McKenzie, secretary of the Wairarapa Rugby Football Union, left Carterton yesterday afternoon to attend the New Zealand Rugby Union’s annual''meeting which is being held in Wellington today. Mr and Mrs Clem Manley, of Pembroke Street, have returned from a holiday spent in the south. The many friends of Mrs J. A. Lawrence, of Carterton, will regret to hear she has found it necessary to enter the Croydon Hospital for treatment. Vital Statistics. The following are the vital statistics for April, the figures for the corresponding month last year being given in parentheses:—Births, 10 (7); deaths, 1 (3); marriages, 1 (4). Appointment of Teachers. Among the teachers appointments made by the Wellington Education Board is Mi’ R. J. Maclpe, who will be assistant at Carterton District High School. A Popular Selector. At a meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Football Council held in Wellington yesterday the nominations for selectors recorded the fact that Mr E. McKenzie had received the support of nearly all the unions for position of New Zealand sole selector. Visit of Missionary. Carterton was visited yesterday by the Rev. G. A. H. Eldredge, a Canadian missionary, who is on a world walking tour.
