ROAD CYCLING

WAIRARAPA CLUB. NOTES ON SATURDAY'S RACE. (By “Three-Speed.”) The Wairarapa Cycling Club held its third race on Saturday to Mt Bruce and return, a distance of 20 miles. The weather was rather cold. On the outwards the riders had the wind behind them and a fast pace was set but on rounding the turn they had to face a driving wind and cold rain but apart from this the time taken was good. L. Green rode a magnificent race to capture his first win this season and also gained third fastest time honours. A little more practice and more will be heard of this rider. M. Graham also rode very well indeed to gain second place. I think this competitor has had a place in every race and each race sees him improving in form. R. Copp was without his co-marker K. Woollett on Saturday. K. Woollett was unable to ride but Copp rode well on his own to catch up on Goodin and gain third place and fastest time. G. Goodin rode a fine race to gain second fastest time and at the rate he is going it will not be long before we find him back on scratch. J. McAliece did better this week but still wants a little more training in order to keep up with the hack markers. J. Brader was a non-starter owing to an attack of ’flu, and the club membeis wish him a speedy recovery. C. Gourlay also was a non-starter owing to having a dental operation and the boys hope he has got over the effects. B. Dooling rode well but was left in the sprint. He is, however, doing splendidly. P. Mayes was a starter on Saturday. This was his first race and he found the going hard. He will do better with more training. E. Lefort was again on the starting line and was fit on Saturday, taking a lot of catching. Just after the middle markers had caught him he had machine trouble and was out of commission. Better luck next time. K. Gilbert is also improving and should be well to the fore before long. Another non-starter on Saturday was O. Morris. The Carterton rider h'ad a slight mishap to himself and his cycle the other night while training. On the whole all the competitors rode very well and are just starting to settle down, most of them showing vast improvement on early form. After Saturday’s race the riders were invited to afternoon tea so generously provided by Mr and Mrs Graham. Second Street, and' this was appreciated very much by the riders who wish to thank Mr and Mrs Graham for the keen interest which they are taking in the club.
