CONCERN IN ROME

FEfi'S OF COMM WAR IN EUROPE DIPLOMATIC SOUNDINGS. PEACE INITIATIVE SAID TO EE DESIRED. By Association— Copyright. (Received This Day. 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, May 2. “the Times” Rome correspondent says the Freneh-British-Soviet negotiations are producing signs of great concern. Italy is alarm e'd at the possibility of war in Northern Europe in which she would be involved through her commitments to Germany. Significantly, several newspapers, while protesting that the Axis Powers are impregnable, dwell on the disastrous results of a general war, especially to France. Undoubtedly Italy would welcome a peace initiative from an acceptable quarter. President Roosevelt is ruled out, but there is reason to believe that Italian diplomacy is taking soundings to discover whether a Government more aloof than the United Slates could be induced to undertake the relief of tension by judicious mediation. ANOTHER STORY HUGE MILITARY CREDITS VOTED. NEW TAXATION EXPECTED. PARIS, May 2. It is reliably reported that the Italian Council of Ministers has voted £78,000,000 in military credits in addition to £110,000,000 on December 14 and £55,000,000 on March 27, making a total of £243,000,000. New taxation is expected.
