ISLAND EARTHQUAKE

FOLLOWED BY TIDAL WAVE. MISSION BUILDINGS DESTROYED IN SOLOMONS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH. May 2. Private advice was received in Christchurch today of an earthquake and tidal wave occurring on Monday in the south Solomon Islands. This was confirmed by the Christchurch magnetic observatory, which on Monday, before midday, recorded a disturbance of major intensity, with its centre approximately at the location of the islands.

The cable message received in Christchurch was handed in at the cable office in Tulagi, capital of the islands at 8 a.m. today. It stated that most of the buildings of the Central Catholic Mission at Visale, 35 miles away on another island, had been destroyed. There was nothing in the message to indicate that there has been any loss of life.
