A PROMISING JUMPER

(By “The Cynic.”)

The former Gisborne maiden, Vesty, who. it is believed, hunted last season, has done well since Jim Manuel took him over. With “Tiger” Rohloff in the saddle, he was put over a couple of circuits of the steeplechase fences. He took the board obstacles in his stride; he screwed a little at the double brush; but his exhibition, for a novice, left little to be desired. Spelling. ' Barabbas, wno paid a big dividend when he won at Trentham did poorly on his trip south to Riccarton at Easter, and he has now been turned out for a spell till next season. He is likely to come up a useful horse in his second season. Moderate Showing. After his moderate showing in the Parua Bay Hurdles at Whangarei, King’s Lancer, who was formerly raced by Mr W. H. Gaisford, was given by Mr C. Hannigan to a Waiuku sports, who will probably use the aged son of Greyspear as a hunter. A Prospect. The good display of Bronze Emerald at Avondale draws attention to his immediate prospects. A three-year-old by Bronze Eagle—Queen Emerald, he is expected to break the run of bad luck experienced for some time by his owner, Mr W. Kemp. Successful. Since he settled at Ellerslie, I. Tucker has had a fair measure of success with a moderate team. He turned out two winners, Agog and Royal Ace, at Wharigarei, both being owned by Mrs E. Roberts, for whom a turn of luck was overdue. Back to Form. Beaten by a neck and a head into third place in the final race at Whangarei, Prince Rangi gave an indication that he is back to form. Now trained by E. J. Murtagh at Te Awamutu, Prince Rangi looked well at Whangarei, and he may be due for an early win. A Winter Horse. Nothing at Awapuni at present looks better- than: the Nigger Minstrel gelding Quadroon, and, as he has been kept going along quietly all through the dry spell, it would not take much to bring him up to top form. Luke Wilson is wise in pot asking this good gelding to race at present, for he is an outstanding galloper! under winter conditions, and is welll worth waiting for. I
