OPENING OF SEASON SEVEN,A,SIDE TOURNAMENT. SENIOR WON BY GLADSTONE. The Wairarapa Rugby Union opened its season on Saturday with a se-ven-a-side tournament for senior and junior grades at the Carterton Showgrounds. In spite of the rather un favourable weather conditions, there was a fairly good. attendance of the public and for so early in the season a surprisingly good standard of play was witnessed. , The senior grade was won by Gladstone after a keen struggle in the final with Greytown. Junior honours wen to Greytown B, who defeated Featherston in the final. The results were as follow:— Seniors. First round: Carterton B beat Greytown B. 18/0; Carterton A beat Red Star A, 5/3; Gladstone A beat Masteiton B, 16/0. . , Second round: Carterton B beat Gladstone B, 28/0. Third round: Greytown A beat Carterton B, 3/0; Gladstone A beat Carterton A, by a force down Final: Gladstone A beat Greytown A, 3/0. Juniors. First round: Greytown B beat Carterton B 3/0; Martinborough A beat Greytown A, 6/0; Featherston A beat Carterton A, 3/0; Martinborough B beat Featherston B, by a force down; Red Star B beat Opaki B, 5/0. Second round: Greytown B beat Red Star A, 5/3; Featherston A beat Mar- ' tinborough A, 3/0; Red Star B forfeited to Martinborough B. Third round: Greytown B beat Martinborough B, 3/0. Final: Grey town B beat Featherston A, 3/0. . MASTERTON BEATEN. After a keenly contested game at Memorial Park, a combined Masterton junior and third grade team was 1 defeated 8/6 by the St. Patrick’s third grade team from Palmerston North. IN OTHER CENTRES WELLINGTON. Ideal weather favoured the Wellington Rugby Union for the opening of its championship competitions on Saturday afternoon. Ground and ball were dry and a bracing southerly wind fanned the heated players. In the senior first division, the Wellington backs combined well to beat Poneke at Athletic Park by 32 points to 10. J. M. Taylof, the All Black fullback, filled this position for Wellington, and swelled the score with his accurate goal-kicking. Better scrummaging enabled Petone to outplay Oriental by 23 points to 9. Oriental were welcomed back into the top division on taking the field by cheers from the Petone fifteen. University showed good combination to prevail over Eastbourne by 19 points to 3. . ' Athletic could get home from Johnsonville by only a potted goal by E. W. Tindill to a penalty goal by J. Bums. Marist Brothers’ Old Boys had pace among the backs and this factor was mainly responsible for their victory over Wellington College Old Boys by one point, the scores being 13-12. Hutt had to go their hardest to beat St Patrick’s College Old Boys by 13 points to 10. AUCKLAND. Marist 3, beat Grafton 0; Ponsonby 6, beat Training College 5; Grammar Old Boys 17, beat North Shore 3; Manukau 12, beat Technical 8. CHRISTCHURCH. University’ 20, beat Christchurch 6; Southern 13, beat Merivale 6; Old Boys 14, beat Albion 3; Athletic 14, beat Sunnnyside 8; Linwood 12, beat Technical 8. DUNEDIN. Pirates 22, beat Union 9; Zingari 20, beat University B 0; Dunedin 12, beat Alhambra 5; Kaikorai 6, beat University A 0; Southern 37, beat Taieri 8.
