The Air Ministry is converting Alderney Island into a second Gibraltar, in order to round off Britain s domination of the English Channel. The Alderney State Council has unanimously agreed to a'-plan under which the Government will take over a fifth of the island's area. Arrangements are completed to enlarge and improve the existing landing field and extensive fortification is being carried out whereby the island will be rendered impregnable. Improvements may be made to the harbour, which is capable of accommodating warships. A detachment of the Royal Irish Fusiliers has landed io guard the new works.
