TOOLEY STREET RAN TRUE TO FORM
(By
“The Cynic.”)
With the easing of track conditions. Tooley Street showed his true form at Whangarei. where he won the Mclnhes Memorial and finished fourth in the Autumn Handicap. Had he not lost several lengths at the start of the Autumn Handicap he would probably have won. Tooley Street is sure to be a good winter winner for owner-train-er H. Rama. Should Atone. After leading most of the way at Whangarei Corato just failed to see out the open sprint and finished fourth. Corato is an improving sprinted who is not likely to be overlooked for one failure. His beginning ability will be an asset any time he figures in a big field. Turned Out. Mr J. D. Kemp has turned out Jolie Dance'and in her place has recommissioned the steeplechaser Electric Flash. A dashing jumper, Electric Flash has been rather hard to handle, but for **?;hich she would have had a better .record. Useful Galloper. Now that heavy rain has fallen, the period of hard tracks is ended for the season, and Rcyevrus is one who should now be able to reproduce his best form. He is a useful galloper up to a mile and a quarter and may make Ills next appearance at Pukekohe. Saccone. In the only race he had at Avondale-. Saccone was going great guns at me finish alter being unlucky in -the running. Hitherto a disappointment. Saccone appears likely Io make amends in tne near future. Improving. In her last start at Avondale, Valirnecii finished second after leading to within a short distance of the post. This mare is lacking robustness, but seems to be getting better under the quiet programme carried out by her trainer. C. Morse. She may be a sprint prospect at Pukekohe. Sporting Song. If the distance is correct and not less than two miles. Sporting Song put up a creditable performance at Waverley in winning with 9.1.3 in 3min 52sec. Sporting Song is a seven-year-old gelding by Hunting Song from Lionskin, by Kilbroney—Counterfeit, by Treadmill.
Sky Pilot. The Day Comet horse Sky Pilot, who is again in active commission, has not been seen in public since racing at the Wellington winter meeting of 1937. He was then racing as a four-year-old and started in eight races. After three unplaced performances Sky Pilot finished third over fences at Waikato. He won the Greenlane Steeplechase and Tamaki Steeplechase at Auckland, but failed when produced for the Wellington Steeplechase. Apparently Sky Pilot had trained off and was then sent out for a lengthy spell. A Prospect. Guiding Light came through her trip to Waverley in good order and it may not require very much improvement for her to win in the next few weeks. Her trainer, Mick Thomson, notched two more seconds at Waverley. Made Mistakes. Strolling could do no better than run second at Waverley. but the Vigono gelding may have been harder to beat had he jumped as well as he usually does. He made several mistakes. but is capable of much better things later on. Looks Well. Corroboree looks better at present than lie has done for a long while and he may not be a hard horse to place this winter as he handles heavy track conditions well. In Great Order. It may not be. long before Diamond Cutter adds to his winning account. George Now has this gelding in great order just at present. Arctic King. Though he galloped indifferently on Tuesday. Arctic King looks well after his southern trip, during which he failed narrowly to win his second Great Autumn. His owner-trainer believes that he would have succeeded if the hard track had not made it seem the wiser course not to give him a race on the first day of the meeting. Siegmund. Siegmund is likely to be raced at Egmont next week, unless the going should bo very heavy, but after that he will bo pottered about without being actually turned out till it is time for him to commence on a preparation for next spring.
