GOUNOD HONOURED
COMMEMORATIVE TABLET. A commemorative tablet is to be placed on the wa.. of the house where Charles Gounod, composer of Faust, the most popular of all operas, passed the last fourteen years of his life. The house stands in the Place Malesherbes. Paris. A number of well known conductors will be present at the ceremony. For the occasion, Faust will be presented at the Opera with new scenery and costumes, and Gounod's works will be given prominence in all concert programmes. Gounod’s Faust, which has been played more than 2000 times' at the Paris Opera, can always sell every seat in the House. Like the hero, it has been apparently endowed with perpetual youth. Tastes in music may change, the highbrows may dismiss it with a gesture of superiority, but still it draws and holds its audiences in its spell from the first note to the last.
