PRICE OF SUGAR

o INCREASES IN WHOLESALE RATES. POSITION IN MASTERTON. During the last three weeks the wholesale price of sugar has been increased by £2 per ton, the latest increase, one of 10s per ton announced this morning, following on rises of £1 per ton announced on Wednesday and 10s per ton about a fortnight earlier. No reason is given for the increase. The position in Masterton, as far as retail prices are concerned, is somewhat involved, as nearly every shop or firm has a different price. For instance, one large concern is charging £1 per bag for cash and £1 Is booked, compared with 18s 3d and 19s 3d respectively before the recent increases. Another firm with a considerable cash connection is charging 19s 3d per bag, compared with 18s 6d before the rises, while in another instance, that of a cash business, the former rate of 18s Gd still rules. Some grocers are charging 4d per lb for lots under 61b or 41b as the case might be, with larger quantities at 31d per lb. All these charges, however, do not take into account the 10s rise in wholesale prices announced this morning, so that there is some possibility of further alterations being made in the next day or so. ALL GRADES UP. COMPANY'S PRICES AT AUCKLAND. WELLINGTON, This Day. The Colonial Sugar Refining Company notifies that the advance of 10s per ton announced today affects all grades, including tablets, bulk and cartons, icing, coffee crystals, golden syrup and treacle. The company’s prices per ton for 701 b. bag lots f.o.b. Auckland is now: — Brewers’ crystals, £2B 10s; castor, £3O ss; Number One, £27 15s; One A. £27; Two. £26 10s: Three, £25 10s. Similar advances have been made in golden syrup and treacle in casks and in cases and boxes containing tins. The prices are applicable to all parts of New Zealand except the Auckland district.
