DEMAND FOR HOOSES

government as builders. TO COMPETE WITH CONTRACTORS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, April 28. To meet the intense demand for housing the department intends to enter the building trade according to an announcement made today by the Minister, the Hon. H. T. Armstrong, who said that the system under which wages gangs would be employed would be put into operation within a few weeks. The department would compete with contractors and a close watch would be maintained to see how far this innovation would be successful. The system will begin in Wellington. The Minister also said that an inducement would be offered to Trade Unions to form building parties. It was also prepared to assist Unions in taking up this class of work to employ extra men and train them in trades.
