GOLDEN RIDGE HAS IMPROVED
(By -The Cynic.”)
The manner in which the big Lackham gelding Golden Ridge won the Halcombe Handicap at Feilding, stamps him as a greatly improved horse. For one of his size, he is unexpectedly nippy on his feet, and from No. 1 position, he began with the best of them, and was with the leading division all the way. Awapuni track watchers saw him perform a winning gallop over six furlongs two days before he raced at Feilding, and they were confident that he would win. He did so, and won very well. His second-day defeat can be overlooked, and it seems certain that more will be heard from him in the near future. Lady Fox. Like many others. Lady Fox showed no accession of form when the hard going came into force. This filly has run several promising races and, being a daughter of Lady Marie, all of whose stock were at home in soft going, it may be well to remember Lady Fox when the rain comes. Lost Form. Erunhild has been one of the most disappointing of classic winners in recent years. This Siegfried filly was very promising in the early part of her career and was a little unlucky not to win the Stewards’ Handicap as a three-year-old. At the same meeting she won the Oaks Stakes and it is strange that neither she, nor the runner-up, Elegy, has done any good since Brunhild and Elegy had a terrific battle that day, and it is quite probable that the hard race knocked the pair of them. Brunhild raced at Hastings recently, and on the first day was very mulish when taken out on the course to do her preliminary. She was also troublesome at the barrier, and lashed out twice at Aureus, who was standing beside her. Brunhild acted like a horse who has been soured. Done Well. Wardress has done well since she returned to Riccarton following a spell which was necessitated when she went off colour after racing at the January meeting at Trentham. It was expected that Wardress would have won there after an unbeaten tour on the West Coast, but she did not meet with the best of luck at Trentham and an attack of kidney trouble was coming on. She looks better now than she did then. Raced Poorly. Many winners of the Wanganui Debutante Stakes have failed completely to distinguish themselves later on the Turf. This year’s winner, Pas de Cheval, looks like adding his name to the list. More often than not. the Wanganui Debutante, run' very early in the, spring, is won by a two-year-old which has thrived early and is more forward than its opponents. This evidently was the case with Pas de Cheval, who has raced poorly in his few starts since. He showed plenty of speed each day at Feilding. but was one of the first to stop when the straight was reached. Good Races. For a novice hurdler, Allmetic ran good races at Tauranga, and he is expected to prove a hack hurdles winner for R. H. Martin during the winter, Allmetic will not meet such a strong field at Pukekohe as he did at Tauranga. and he may give a good account of himself.
