LABOUR NOMINEE
WAIRARAPA COLLEGE BOARD. QUESTION RAISED BY TRADES COUNCIL. The question of the bodies eligible to nominate an employees' representative on the Waii’arapa College Board of Governors came up for discussion at last nights meeting Of the board. It was decidea to adhere to the procedure adopted in tne past. The secretary, Mr H. M. Boddington reported having communicated with the Wairarapa Trades and Labour Council, the P. and T, Association, the Waingawa Works Employees’ Association, and the Railway Guild, asking these bodies to appoint two delegates each to attend a conference to appoint an employees’ representative on the beard, as the time of the present member had expired by effluxion of time. Mr Boddington Stated that the Wairarapa Trades ahd Labour Council had replied to the ellect that the P. and T. Association and the Railway Guild were not affiliated with the New Zealand Federation of Labour, and as faias the Federation was concerned did not exist. The council asked if a number of unions specified, which were affiliated, would be elegible to make nominations. Mr Boddington explained that his letters to the bodies mentioned had followed the procedure in the past, which was according to resolution of the board.
Mr Alex Donald pointed cut that any alteration Would only be possible by rescinding tne previous resolution, after having given due notice of motion. It was explained by Mr P. M. Smith that Masterton members of the unions stated were enrolled as members of Wellington district Unions, as there were not separate unions in Masterton for the trades mentioned. Mr A. Owen Jones said if Masterton members of these bodies nominated their member it would be all right, but if Wellington members of those unions, who had no interest in the College, had a voice he would question the advisability of that procedure. ■•lt is not. for us to say," observed Mr F. C. Daniell.
“If- is a vital thing," said Mr Jones, who askea if it would be possible for the Trades and Labour Council to meet the P. and T. Association and the Railway Guild and come to some ar-rangement.-As the secretary had pointed out, said Mr Jones, if the P. aiid T. Association and the Railway Guild were not consulted it would mean disfranchising the members of these bodies.
On the motion of Mr Jones, it was decided to reply to the Trades and Labour Council to lhe effect that the board desired the procedure of the past to be carried out. as had been requested, by the council Conferring with'the other bodies named.
On the suggestion of Mr Donald it was agreed to add to the resolution that if this procedure was considered unsatisfactory, the council should confer with the two other bodies concerned as to future policy.
