PIPING AND DANCING
MEETING OF WELLINGTON CENTRE. CENTENNIAL COMPETITION. The executive of the Wellington Centre of the Piping and Dancing Association of New Zealand met in Masterton on Saturday evening, when there were present: Messrs C. Stewart (chairman), J. McKenzie, and Major J. W. Bird (Masterton), Messrs T. S. Arcus (Carterton), W. A. Blair, W. Brown, A. Barclay, C. Stewart, junr. (Wellington), Sergt. A. McCowan (Eketahuna), Messrs N. Crudon, V. J. Nicholson, A. MacDonald (Palmerston North), I. Cameron (president), and M. Gray Nasmith (secretary). Considerable discussion took place on the new rule prohibiting the use of the shillelagh and animation in the Irish jig. It was urged that efforts should be made to have the new rule rescinded at the next annual meeting of the association, and this course was unanimously decided upon. Replies from the different sports organisation furnishing information as to the results of the various piping competitions were received, and it was agreed that the replies be held over till a future meeting when they would be considered and all pipers graded. An application from the Scotch Thistle Society, of Palmerston North, for affiliation was granted. It was decided to approach the Dominion Council in Dunedin relative to the shortage of rule books and asking authority to enable the Centre to have the rules printed. It was unanimously resolved that a competition for piping and dancing be held in Wellington during tne Centennial, and that application be made to Dunedin to allot all the Dominion championships to the gathering. An advisory committee was set up, consisting of the president, chairman, secretary and Mr A. MacDonald, to consider the matter and report to the next meeting of the executive. The secretary reported that permits for the following gatherings had been issued: Shannon Sports Club, March 11; Sandon Sports Club, March 18; Oroua Downs Sports Club, April 1. The Dominion Council had allotted the North Island Irish Jig championship for all comers, any age, to the Oroua Downs gathering. Notification- was received that the North Island Irish Jig championship at Oroua Downs had been won by Claude Henderson, of Palmerston North. The North Island championship Highland Reed, under 16, at Linton, had been won by Dorothy McLean, of Palmerston North, with Mota McKenna, of Wellington, second, and Nola Cooper, of Palmerston North, third. The New Zealand piping championship for slow airs, at the Hunterville sports, had been won by Mr John McKenzie, of Masterton.
