LEGION OF FRONTIERSMEN
ANNUAL CONFERENCE OPENED
IN WELLINGTON. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The annual conference of the Legion of Frontiersmen was ' opened by the Commandant, Colonel Martyn-Roberts, V.D. There is a full representation of delegates from both Islands. The resignation of the Commandant, owing to his advancing years, was received with regret and on his nomination Major Alan Smith, his staff officer, was made Commandant, with the rank of colonel. Colenel Maryn-Roberts and Major A. N. Hardy were elected as the two commissioners and were also made life members. It was noted with satisfaction that the corps had several members who had qualified under the Defence authorities as competent instructors in preventive methods adopted against the use of chemicals and gas in warfare. It was stressed that annual examinations for appointments and promotion must be encouraged, as no appointments would be made of unqualified men. The result of the last examinations shewed that the corps possessed capable officers and the hope was expressed that the same standard would be maintained in future.
The Commandant proposed that during Anzac week next year, a bivouac should be held in Wellington during the Exhibition.
