CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE & COURSE Views on Racing Facts and Fancies A TIMARU CUP PROSPECT (By “The Cynic.”)
Milford, who took no harm from his hard racing at Riverton, will have his next start in the Tirnaru Cup on Thursday, and although he meets Passaform on 31b. worse terms than when he finished in fourth place to Passaform in the Riverton Cup, he can be relied on to run a great race. Milford without a doubt is the best handicap horse in Southland at the present time. He has now won 15 races, been second 10 limes and third 14 times in 79 starts. His stake earnings amount to £3059 and he has never won over a shorter distance than a mile. / Rehearsal. Rehearsal, the half-brother by Ll- - to Chief Ranger, is due to make his reappearance im the hack five furlongs at Waverley. A winner at Manawatu as a juvenile, he has been off th'e scene since he unsuccessfully contested the Wanganui Guineas in the spring. Last season Rehearsal won the Stonyhurst Juvenile Handicap at Manawatu. He was got by Limond from ■Miss Thespian. Night Bound.
The Night Raid gelding Night Bound who is engaged at Tirnaru, was third to Sunward and Flashlight in the Enfield Steeplechase and second to Gold Wren in the Hunt Cup. He fell when running in the Aylesbury Steeplechase.
Australian-Bred. Silver Choir, who won in impressive style at Riverton, has continually been troubled with unsoundness since purchased in Australia as a yearling by Mr W. Baird. Until he won at Riverton all hope of his surviving a preparation had almost been given up and a stud career was intended for the Silvius horse. Last season he was mated with two mares and both are believed to be in foal. One of his consorts was Lady Seaton, the dam of Ocean Ranger. The other was an Australian-bred mare by Blue Flame, who was also purchased as a yearling with Silver Choir, but failed to stand a preparation. The Blue Flame mare is out of Ardes, by Top Gallant from Ardesia, by Spearmint.
Success for Synagogue. The Rabbi horse Synagogue won the Chantilly Plate, one mile, at Bombay on March 12. There were 15 starters, and Synagogue, who had 8.8 to the 9.0 of Flying Glance and Grand March, started at 6 to 1. Ridden by J. Simpson, he won by a head from Cash Book, and the fime, lmin. 37 4-ssecs. was four-fifths of & second outside the course record. Synagogue is trained by R. Higgins, who had two other wins during the afternoon. Simpson and E. Britt each rode two winners.
A Profitable Horse. Gold Rod has failed on occasions when expected by his connections to shine, but as his wins include the Breeders’ Plate, V.R.C. Sires’ Produce Stakes, A.J.C. Sires’ Produce Stakes, Hobartville Stakes, Chelmsford Stakes, Futurity Stakes, Essendon Stakes, A.J.S St. Leger, Epsom Handicap, and Doncaster Handicap, he has been profitable for Mr E. J. Watt, G. Price, and M. McCarten. As a yearling in New Zealand Gold Rod cost 350 guineas, a small outlay by comparison with the total value of the races enumerated.
