ROAD CYCLING

WAIRARAPA CLUB’S RACE. WON BY B. DOOLING. The Wairarapa Amateur Cycling Club held its second race of the 1939 road season on Saturday over a distance of 151 miles. The race was held over a course commencing from Messrs Fly and Young's corner, Bannister Street to Te Whiti School via Johnston Street and return. The weather conditions were cold with a fair head wind on the outward journey. The type of race was new to the club, being run under a sealed handicap. A rolling start saw the ten riders away at 2.30 p.m., the pace being very fast down Bannister Street and Johnstone Street. The field held together very well considering the number of sprints on the outward journey. Gilbert and Morris dropped back shortly after the start. The five-mile mark saw McAliece and Goodin dropping back. The latter rider, however, caught the leading bunch later, only to drop back again before the turn. The turn saw six riders bunched —Copp, Woollett, Brader, Graham, Dooling and Green. Brader made a fast break here to pull the field out a bit, but it was not until the first hill, about a mile from the turn, that this bunch was actually split up. Copp and Woollett broke away here to finish the ride together, Woollett defeating Copp by half a length for fastest time. About a minute later the next bunch finished headed home by Goodin, closely followed by Graham, Dooling, Brader and Green. At short intervals McAliece, Morris and Gilbert finished. Goodin, incidentally made a brilliant solo ride to catch his bunch after being well behind at the turn. The detailed results are:—B. Dooling (2mins.), 1; G. Goodin! 1.40), 2; M. Graham, (1.30), 3; L. Green, (1.15), 4. The fastest times were: —K. Woollett (sen), 33min. 16secs., 1; R. Copp (scr.), 38min. 16 l-ssecs., 2; G. Goodin (1.40), 38min. 55secs., 3.
