IMPORT CONTROL

APPLICATION TO FRUITS & OTHER PRODUCTS UNDER INTERNAL MARKETING DEPARTMENT. > STATEMENT BY MR NASH. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, April 22. The control of imports of fruits, vegetables and certain other products will in future be undertaken by the Internal Marketing Division of the Primary Products Marketing Department, the Minister of Marketing (the Hon W. Nash) stated today. The goods affected include maize, barley, malt, hops, potatoes, canned peas, vegetables, fresh dried or preserved fruit, fruit juices, citrus fruit, pulps, dried fruits, fresh fruits, fruit pulp, fruits preserved in juice or syrup, jams, jellies, marmalade, preserves, candied peel, drained peel, lemon and orange rinds, dehydrated or in brine. “The object of the control,” said Mr Nash, “is to enable imports to be co-ordinated more effectively with production New Zealand. The new procedure will not apply to shipments which may be imported prior to the end of June next under import licences which have been granted covering imports up to that date. In the meantime, all applications to import after June.3o should be made to Collectors of Customs'in the ordinary way. Such applications, which should be lodged without delay, will be forwarded to the Director of Internal Marketing for consideration. Holders of licences already granted to import after June 30 should also immediately furnish to the Director particulars of such licences and of any commitments made thereunder, as regards purchases overseas or sales in New Zealand. In order that a register may be compiled as early as possible, those interested in importing any of the goods mentioned (including those who have applied for or propose to apply for import licences and also agents who sell such goods on an indent basis) should notify the Director of Internal Marketing not later than May 5 accordingly. It is not proposed in the meantime (concluded Mr Nash) to disturb existing arrangements regarding the issue of licences for shipments of fresh fruit and vegetables imported on consignment from the South Sea Islands and shipments of fresh pineapples imported on consignment from Australia. No -licence is required for shipments from the Cook Islands and Western Samoa.”
