TABLE TENNIS
WINTER SPORTS CLUB. TOURNAMENT AT MASTERTON. Over one hundred and thirty players took part in an open tournament organised by the Winter Sports Club and held in the Y.M.C.A. hall on Saturday night. A large gathering of Spectators witnessed play of a very high standard. Players were present from Wellington, Petone, Hutt, Greytown, Carterton. Mauriceville West and Hastwells, ten tables being in use. Playing in the men’s singles, the North Island champion, E. Hughes (Wellington) defeated M. Gosling (Wellington), 35/33, in an even, exciting game. Gosling was selected to play the Hungarians during their tour. of New Zealand. The ladies’ singles resulted in a win for Miss Pat Harvey (Wellington, and formerly of Masterton), who defeated Miss J. Larsen (Mauriceville), 31/18, in a fast game. Misses Wareham and Croxton, Wei-, lington representative players won the ladies’ doubles, and Gosling and Wilson (Wellington), beat Hughes and Longmore( Wellington). Messrs Gosling and Hughes played an exhibition singles match, E. Hughes winning in two straight sets. An excellent supper was served by the ladies’ committee. Mr J. Haywood (president), who congratulated the players on the high standards set and thanked visiting players for their support, referred to the annual meeting which is to be held shortly and asked members to attend. ANNUAL REPORT. The annual report to be presented at the annual meeting on Wednesday evening, April 26. states: — “The club has much pleasure in recording another year of progress. The membership stood at 29 as compared with 23 last year, and indications are for an increase this season. The club opened the season with an enjoyable Yankee tournament on May 7 and concluded a highly successful season on October 8. The club competitions held during the season were keenly contested with a very high standard of play being maintained. The results were as follows: Ladies’ singles: A grade, Mrs J. Nicholls; B grade, Miss O. Quinn. Men’s singles: A grade, Mr J. Nicholls: B grade, Mr B. Hurley. Ladies’ doubles: Mesdames Nicholls and Winslade. Men's doubles: Messrs K. Brader and M. Winslade.
The club wishes to congratulate the following club members who competed successfully in the Wairarapa Championships: Messrs J. Nicholls and M. Winslade; Mesdames Nicholls and Winslade, and Miss H. Winter. During the season the Y.M.C.A. Table Tennis Club. Wellington, paid a friendly visit, a most interesting match being played. The visitors were more experienced, however, than our members. “The club desires to place on record the outstanding services freely given by the ladies’ committee during the season. Thanks are due to the Press for generous publicity and to the Y.M.C.A. Board of Directors for the use of the Association’s rooms, in which connection, the co-operation of Mr A. E. Bate is acknowledged. The club has every prospect of an enjoyable season, both socially and financially.” The report is signed by the president, Mr J. Haywood, and the hon secretary, Mr’ M. G. Wing.
