MEMORIAL PAGEANTRY
SHAKESPEARE ANNIVERSARIES. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. LONDON, April 22. Brilliant pageantry marked Strat-ford-on-Avon’s celebration of Shakespeare’s birthday and the diamond jubilee of the Memorial Theatre. The flags of 77 nations were unfurled. Thousands lined the streets fora floral procession of pilgrims, who placed a wreath on Shakespeare’s tomb. Mr J. B. Priestly, speaking at a commemoration luncheon, deplored the present state of theatrical art caused by heavy taxation and lack of newspaper interest.
