POPPY DAY COLLECTION. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Carterton branch of the R.S.A. should feel very pleased with the work of the Women’s Division in the sale of their poppies yesterday. The sale was well up to last year’s record and at 5 o’clock, when the canvas concluded, £56 3s had been collected. Borough Council Meeting. Owing to Anzac Day falling on Tuesday, the monthly meeting of the Council will be held on Thursday of next week instead of Tuesday. LEAGUE OF MOTHERS. CARTERTON BRANCH. At the monthly meeting of the Carterton branch ox the League of Mothers in St Andrew’s Hall, the president, Mrs R. H. Every, presided over a' fair attendance. The meeting opened with the League- hymn and a welcome was given to all members who attended on such a wet afternoon. The aims and objects of the League and the minutes were read by Mrs E. Williams. The Thought' for the Month, given by Mrs C. K. Goodin, was: , For all the evils under- the sun, There is a remedy or there is none; If there be one try and find it, If there be none never mind it. The Hint was given by Mrs J.. L. Hunt. Regret at the departure of Mrs L. H. Sorenson for Paremata wai expressed, and the best wishes of the League were extended for her future happiness. An enjoyable time was spent with music and competitions, pianoforte solos being played very ably by Miss Verna Sorenson and two solos were sung by Miss Connie Surtees. All these items were greatly appreciated by the members. Votes of 'thanks were passed to all who had contributed to the success of the afternoon. Afternoon tea and the National Anthem brought a very enjoyable meeting -to a close. Personal Items. Mr C. J. DeLacey, of Carterton, has been elected a vice-president of the Wellington Miniature Rifle Association. Mr I. J. Mackie, North Auckland, has been appointed assistant headmaster of the Carterton District High School. He will take up his duties on May 22. The late Mrs Caroline Martin, whose death was recorded yesterday, was born in Wellington but had resided in Carterton for 60 years and .with her late. husband was one of the early pioneer settlers. A family of three sons and seven daughters are left to mourn their loss. They are Messrs James, South Carterton, William, Otahuhu, and Michael, Sydney; Mesdames Len Herrick, Palmerston North, M. Johnson, Moreton Road, Carterton, P. Herrick, Kimbolton, Feilding, E. M. Brown, Auckland, A. Page, Taihape, J. A. Roberts, Taumata, and Miss Elsie Martin, of the homestead. There are 33 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
